Under 8's Morning at Carbrook State School
You are invited to Carbrook State School's Under 8's morning on Wednesday 28 May 2025

Principal Mark Winrow

While it has been lovely to ease back into the term with short weeks, it certainly puts us under pressure to get through the curriculum with the students. The pressure mounts further with all of the wonderful events we squeeze in to ensure our students are provided with opportunities to create lasting memories of school.
On parade each week I encourage the children to strive for 1% better everyday. Sometimes I ask them to think of a personal goal to invest their 1% into, and other times I encourage them to work on something I have noticed needs attention. At this week’s parade I asked them to consider improving their transitions around the school by 1% each day. Our expectation is that children move safely around the school. This means that they walk on hard surfaces, they move with their class in compact, quiet lines and they make their journey as direct as possible. Please reinforce this expectation at home.
Before School Expectations
Parents are reminded that our school day starts at 8:50am and we are not able to offer supervision until 8:30am. There are increasing numbers of children arriving at school before this time, with many arriving at 8:00am. We cannot provide supervision at this time and therefore cannot be responsible for their safety. If your child needs to arrive at school before 8:30am they should be accessing the PCYC before school care program. We are finding the children who arrive at school early become very restless. I thank you for your support in keeping our children safe before school.
Year 6 Camp
I had the pleasure of joining the year 6 students and staff on camp at Maranatha Tuchekoi this week. On arrival I was eagerly bombarded with stories of raft building, flying fox and orienteering. My arrival was timed perfectly for a delicious lunch of nachos before I joined in with crate stacking and survival skills. The highlight was the pure jubilation shown as each student was able to use flint and steel to light a cotton ball on fire (that and throwing water over the students through their poorly crafted emergency shelters). I must share my admiration and appreciation for the staff who gave up their usual routines for 3 days to give the students this opportunity.
Premier’s Reading Challenge Launch
As previously shared, we have an exciting event next week. Our school was chosen by the Queensland Premier to launch the Premier’s Reading Challenge. It will be an honour to welcome Mr Crisafulli and the Minister for Education to our school and to showcase the incredible work which happens here. They will be visiting on Thursday 8 May so keep an eye on local news and social media for a record of their visit.
The best part of the Premier’s Reading Challenge is the opportunity our children will have to record the many and varied stories they read and share over the period of the challenge. We will be tracking the texts shared in school in order for the students to meet the challenge.
Logan City Mayor Visit
Our year 5 students will be visited by our local Mayor today, as part of their unit of study. They will have an opportunity to discuss how local government works and be able to ask a range of questions to deepen their knowledge. Our school is truly lucky to have such prominent leaders visiting to inspire our students.
Oval Update
I am continuing to work with experts to have our oval reopened as soon as it is safe. Follow up tests were conducted this week in the hope that they will result in a confirmed all clear for the oval to open. The tests will take a couple of days to be rigorously processed but I hope to have the oval back next week.
I will continue to work with neighbours and council to find a solution to the water which overflows our oval during heavy rainfall. It is my intention to find a sustainable solution which keeps our oval safe for use all year round.
Mothers’ Day Stall
Our wonderful P&C have invested hours creating and selecting some beautiful Mothers’ Day gifts for their stall next week. They are very keen to see the children excitedly choosing gifts to deservedly spoil their mum. Thank you to the P&C for offering this opportunity.
As this will be the last newsletter before Mothers’ Day arrives, I would like to take the opportunity to thank, admire and congratulate the mothers and mother-figures in our students’ lives. I appreciate the time, effort and love which you pour into your children. You will always be your child’s first teacher. I truly hope you receive the spoils you deserve.

Library News
Welcome back to the library for another terrific term of reading and learning. We have a lot going on during the term to encourage students into this amazing space within our school.
Library Lunch
The new ‘Library Lunch’ schedule was announced by some eager Year 5 students during this week’s parade. Thank you to Miles and Ethan for your entertaining delivery. Students may participate in a range of activities every second break in a fun and positive environment. During these activities, students have the opportunity to cultivate and strengthen friendships not only within their own cohort but our whole school. The library is also open for borrowing during this time. Check out this term’s borrowing schedule for each class. Students are reminded that they must bring a library bag to borrow and borrowing is for one week only.

Where will reading take you?

Thank you to Raiya, Isabel (and Sophie) for delivering our second exciting news on parade. By now hopefully everyone has heard that we will be welcoming to our school Premier David Crisafulli along with John-Paul Langbroek MP to launch the 2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge. We are very excited (and a little terrified) to showcase the hub of our school, Our Library! The reading challenge will be facilitated within our classrooms and learning spaces and every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement. What a great excuse to buy more books for our library.

Stay tuned.
But wait, there’s more! It will be a huge term with National Simultaneous Storytime, National Sorry Day, National Reconciliation Week and a special author visit still to come. I wonder who it could be? Stay tuned for updates.
