Issue 8 Friday 30 May 2025
Principal Mark Winrow

Our Under 8’s Day was another wonderful celebration of early education at our school and in our community. It was inspiring to see our school flooded with smiling, engaged learners exploring their environment, led by our team of quality educators. These events do not simply happen. They require considerable time and effort and I want to acknowledge the team, led by Mrs Lara McDonald, for the hours they poured into preparing the event. Thanks also to our supportive P&C who served refreshments all morning to the hungry hoards. I love our great school and would not want to be anywhere else.
National Sorry Day
This week we commemorated National Sorry Day. While the primary focus of the day is to acknowledge the hurts of the past caused to our First Nations’ People, I also took the opportunity on parade to discuss the importance of being sorry. We all make mistakes that hurt others, whether by accident or deliberately in a moment of anger. The first step in repairing damaged relationships is to say sorry. This important step is only valuable though if the words we speak are followed by actions which demonstrate we are sorry. Our job as adults is to model this important human interaction so our children grow up with the skills to maintain positive relationships. Saying and being sorry shows people we care and fosters collaboration.
Positive Feedback
Last week we were visited by our South East Region School Supervisor to quality assure the work we are doing towards our strategic goal of improving the reading outcomes for our students. Our School Supervisor was full of praise for the work our teachers have been doing in implementing daily reviews in classrooms. These short, sharp learning sessions revisit sounds and or spelling generalisations previously taught to assist working memory and develop automaticity of the 44 sounds of Australian English. Please keep an eye out for future updates on our progress and ideas for how you can support your child to know the 44 sounds.
New Staff
We recently welcomed new teacher aides to our school team. Kathlyn Frazer (Year 6), Vicki Larney (Year 4) and Vicki Thomas (Year 3B Friday) have joined our school with many years’ experience in supporting the learning and wellbeing of students. I know you will make them feel welcome.

What a Fantastic Under 8's Day!
On Wednesday 28 May we celebrated Under 8’s Day with an incredible morning of fun, laughter, and learning — and what a wonderful community event it was!
From engaging activities to joyful play, our youngest learners had a blast exploring, creating, and connecting. It was heart warming to see so many smiling faces, with students, staff, families, and community members all coming together to make the day so special.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise and support the event — your efforts made it a memorable experience for all. It truly was a shining example of the strength and spirit of our school community.
We’re already looking forward to next year!

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Building a Love of Reading!
The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well underway at Carbrook State School, and it’s been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and engagement from our students as they dive into books and share their love of reading!
The challenge encourages students to develop a daily reading habit and explore a wide range of books across different genres. Reading not only builds vocabulary, comprehension, and imagination — it also boosts confidence, curiosity, and academic success.
We’ve been thrilled to see students across all year levels taking part, but we’d like to give a special shout-out to 2A, who have shown outstanding commitment to the challenge so far. The students in 2A have been eagerly updating their class poster and proudly sharing their favourite books about the Moon with their peers.
At Carbrook, we believe in making reading both meaningful and fun. From classroom read-alouds and buddy reading sessions to library visits and book chats, the school is buzzing with literary energy.
We encourage all families to continue supporting reading at home by talking about books, visiting your local library, or simply setting aside a quiet time each day to enjoy a story together. Every book counts!
Together, let’s continue to build strong readers — and a lifelong love of learning!

Lifelong readers like these Students. They received a reading certificate and a book prize on parade for being enthusiastic readers.
Teachers will continue to look for eager readers throughout The Premier's Reading Challenge which will continue at Carbrook until the end of Term 2.

Play is the Way

As we continue to embed our Play is the Way Social Skills programs, the students are now becoming very familiar with the 5 life rafts that the program promotes. This term we have introduced the life raft, “It Takes Great Strength to be Sensible” What this means is that, if there are times when you are tempted to engage in activities that are wrong even if they might seem fun or preferred, take some time ask yourself, “Is this sensible?” Sometimes we are encouraged by friends to engage in these activities and that’s where great strength is needed to do the sensible thing (even when your friends might be doing the opposite).

Our games in particular test student’s sensibilities by challenging students to play by the rules that have been set. Play is the Way provides opportunities for students to learn about the values of these life rafts in a structured and supervised environment in which students are acknowledged and rewarded for demonstrating their abilities to follow these life rafts. Here are just some of our brilliant achievers. Well Done!

Not Just a game:
As well as teaching the values of our life rafts, all of our ‘Play is the Way’ games teach students important life skills such as teamwork and collaboration and:
Responsible decision making – make constructive choices about personal behaviour and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety, and social norms.
Self-Management – effectively manage stress, control impulses, and motivate yourself to set and achieve goals
Social Awareness – Understand the perspective of others and empathise with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Relationship skills – communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.

Library News
On Wednesday, Carbrook State School fell in love with Tinka and his family during the National Simultaneous live streaming of The Truck Cat. However, there were some worried faces in the crowd when Tinka decided to play tag with a white butterfly and became separated from Yacoub. Tinka went over, under, over and under traffic until he was picked up by some cool hands belonging to Mari. Yacoub was worried about Tinka and Tinka was worried about Yacoub. Did Tinka and Yacoub have a happy ending or were they lost from each other forever? Well, I’m not going to tell you. If you are interested, watch the engaging story read by Jacek Koman on The Story Box Hub storyboxhub.com/stories/the-truck-cat
Following the reading, classrooms engaged in some Truck Cat activities including drawing a picture of something that gives them a sense of belonging. All of these pictures will be added to ‘The Together Tower’ that will be constructed in the library. This activity aimed to demonstrate how different and similar our stories may be but we all belong in the Carbrook School Community.
To conclude National Simultaneous Storytime each class was gifted a book to present to a student that continually demonstrates kindness and friendship. Congratulations to all the caring recipients, I hope you have shared and enjoyed The Truck Cat with your family.
