Acting Principal Sonya Wilson
Dear parents/carers
As this is the last newsletter for semester one, I would like to thank all members of our school community for their support during this half of the year. Like other organisations, we too have experienced a significant number of families and staff members with either COVID, flu or other seasonal illnesses. The loss of staff in recent times has had a big impact on our ability to maintain a high level of support in terms of replacement staff. However, the efforts of the team to minimalize disruptions to our students' learning has seen outstanding resiliency and flexibility; modelling this important disposition across the school. I humbly acknowledge our wonderful staff members to ensure our school continues to thrive in this environment.
Staffing
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Mrs Christie McDonald and Ms Alana Cutler, for all their efforts this semester and wish them all the very best with the imminent arrival of their babies. Term 3 will see Mrs Christie McDonald in Prep replaced by Mrs Lara McDonald. Lara McDonald is familiar with Carbrook State School’s expectations as she frequently visits as a relief teacher. Mrs Kirsty Gardiner has been on staff since May 9 so has had the opportunity to become familiar with the students and staff of Carbrook State School as well as school expectations.
In addition to these changes we have two staff members taking leave, Mrs Camilla Davis and Mrs Karin Geiger. Mrs Davis will be taking five weeks leave and will be replaced by Miss Jessica Smith. Jessica Smith is new to Carbrook State School, but has taken time this week to meet with staff and students, ensuring a smooth start to term 3. Mrs Karin Geiger will be taking two weeks leave returning 25 July.
Finally, Mrs Kim Egan has extended her leave for another term. I am delighted to continue in the role as acting Principal in her absence.
Reporting
Reports at Carbrook State School were emailed to parents / caregivers, Thursday 23 June.
Reporting is part of communicating with parents and building the school-parent partnership to improve student learning. Our reports outline:
- the student’s achievement against expected standards
- how well the student is engaging with the expected learning
Having a discussion with your child about their report is a powerful way to celebrate success, identify challenge and have a conversation in relation to setting goals for next semester. I also encourage parents and caregivers to discuss the report, usingthis feedback as the basis of ongoing communications with your child’s class teacher and to have a shared focus on the next steps.
School Annual Report 2021
The School Annual Report contains information for parents and community about our school’s journey last year, with a focus on student and school performance, including facts about historical school opinion data and attendance.
I encourage all community members to view the School Annual Report 2021 on our website. It can be accessed here:
School Opinion Surveys
The annual suite of School Opinion Surveys will be conducted in term 3 and will close on 12 August 2022. All families, school staff and students in target year levels (5, 6, 8 and 11) will be invited to participate. We encourage you to take this opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how we can improve.
An invitation to complete the Parent/Caregiver Survey will be emailed to one parent/caregiver per family in the week beginning 11 July. The invitation will be sent from the Department of Education, not the school, and it will have the subject line School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2022. Check your junk email folders if you can’t find it. The survey can be completed as soon as the invitation is received and will take approximately 5 minutes using a computer, tablet or smart phone.
Wishing all our Carbrook State School families a safe and happy holiday.
Kind regards
Sonya Wilson
A/Principal

Year 1/ 2 Making a toy house - procedure
Year 1/ 2 students were so excited to do a hands on and fun project - making a toy house. Students applied their understanding of the structure of a procedure - title, aim, materials and steps/ instructions. They also applied their understanding from what they have learned from the science focus - the properties and features of the materials they chose, to consider the sustainability, creativity and durability of their toy house. We had great fun!

Year 4 Excursion
Carbrook’s Year 4 students were given the opportunity to attend an excursion this week at the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre. The First Contact day program focuses on the initial contacts between Aboriginal and European people in the Moreton Bay area. Students were immersed in a moment in time in 1823, when circumstances brought the two different cultures together for the first time. Students were encouraged to become 'Champions for the Bay' by developing a deeper understanding of local Indigenous Culture and reflecting on historical events and how they shaped the area.
The program began with an introduction to the story of Pamphlett, Parsons and Finnegan, three ex-convicts lost in Moreton Bay. Students adopted the role of Pamphlett, Parsons and Finnegan and followed their story, learning some of the knowledge and skills the Indigenous people of the Moreton Bay area freely shared.
The students achieved the learning intentions of the program, including:
- Investigating tools, techniques and methods of daily life and survival of local Aboriginal people during a presentation by a Quandamooka man
- Translating local Indigenous words for places, food and objects
- Demonstrating teamwork, cooperation and communication whilst completing various survival activities
- Comprehending the early contact experience in Moreton Bay between Indigenous and European people
- Justifying the importance of Moreton Bay’s local cultural heritage
Mrs Dianne Aylward, Principal of MBEEC congratulated the Carbrook students on their team work, behaviour and enthusiasm. She stated this was a credit to the staff and the school and that Mrs Wilson must be so proud.
Students reflected on this experience and made the following comments:
- “We learned that the Nunuckle peoples’ spirit animal is the curlew and and they could speak to dolphins with sound generated from a club hitting on the water or a spear stabbing into the sand.”
- “They taught us how to make soap with certain plants.”
- “I think that this was a great place and other schools should visit.”
- “We learnt how to make fire with two sticks and coconut husk.”
- “I enjoyed making a hut with my friends with a little amount of time. I liked learning how to make a fire with only a few materials.”
- “I was a bit scared to throw the spear but it was fun when I did it.”
- “I would definitely recommend other kids to go and have fun at the MBEEC.”
- “I love all the activities they showed us. I would love to go back again.”

Literacy & Numeracy Coach Leonie Barnham
Second only to ‘are we there yet?’ is…. ‘I’m bored’.
As the school holidays approach, I thought I’d outline some fun learning activities you can do with your children over the break.
READING
Read to you children, with your children and listen to them read to you. Visit the local library. Brisbane libraries are a free way of giving your child an endless supply of books and inspiration. Libraries can offer free Wi-Fi for e-books, quiet corners and other features designed to welcome families.
PLANT SOME SEEDS
Spending time learning how to grow vegetables or herbs over the school holidays is a fantastic way to get children outside and interested in the world around them.
PLAY BOARDGAMES/OTHER GAMES
People who regularly played board games showed better memory, problem solving, thinking speed and general thinking ability.
Get the chalk and play hopscotch, handball, piggy-in-the-middle etc. Not only fun, but great for hand-eye coordination and gross motor skills.
MAKE YOUR OWN BOARDGAME
Get some cardboard and some pens and make up your own game. Have your children design the board, make the clues, write the instructions (procedure), make the rules etc. This involves lots of reading and writing, as well as math skills.
Then play it together.
HAVE A BACKYARD PICNIC- KIDS COOK
Cook lunch with your child. Read recipe books together. Write the menu together. Cooking helps them learn about how different foods look and where they come from. Cooking together helps them develop healthy eating habits because they’re more likely to try healthy food that they have helped to cook. Recipes help children learn about family traditions, recipes and foods.
Cooking involves measuring, weighing, temperature, fractions and other mathematical skills.
DO A JIGSAW
Research shows that doing jigsaw puzzles exercises the left and right sides of your brain at once. They improve your short-term memory, and improve visual-spatial reasoning.
Jigsaw’s come in all shapes, sizes and number of pieces.
PUT ON A PUPPET SHOW
Make your own puppets- sock, paper bag, stick. Write a script, design the set, make the props, make the tickets, write the programme, practise and perform.
MAKE A NATURE PICTURE
Go for a walk or a bike ride and collect nature along the way. Leaves, seed pods, sticks, bark, flowers etc.
Get a piece of cardboard (a cardboard box lid). Use the bits and pieces to create a work of art. Research the pieces collected- What flower is that? Why do leaves have veins? Why are some leaves thicker, thinner, glossier than others? What makes seeds grow?
FIND SHAPES IN THE CLOUDS
Lie down and tell what you see. Ask ‘what makes you say that?’ ‘what makes you think that?’. Describe what you see. Draw them and write about them. Make a ‘cloud’ book. Cut paper in the shape of clouds, staple together and get writing.
WRITE
Make and send a postcard to someone in another town/city. Write a letter to the council about something you feel strongly about- a better playground, rubbish in the local area etc. Have your child keep a holiday journal- include what you did each day, photos, ticket stubs, tokens etc. Share them with friends when they return to school.
Write your own recipes. Illustrate them/photograph them. Give your recipe book as a gift.
Make your own reading books. Write stories, illustrate them and then share them with friends and family. Put them on the family bookshelf.
Write a letter in secret code. Have family members try and break the code and read what it says.
DESIGN AND FLY YOUR OWN PAPER AEROPLANES
Research flight, then design and make your own paper aeroplanes. Hold a competition. Measure the flight distance. Compare the measurements.
Re-assess their designs and remodel.
Write the instructions for making the plane. Create kits in zip lock bags for family members to make. Include the instructions. This involves, math (measurement), literacy (writing and reading), and it’s loads of fun as well.
School holidays can go from boredom to excitement with little effort, time or money. These are just a few ideas how holiday activities can be joyous, as well as educational.
Wishing you all a very happy and safe June/July break.
Student Council
Our Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser has come to an end today. As a school we celebrated by holding a Jump Off Day during lunch break. Students had the opportunity to skip, show off their tricks and come together as a school.
Thank you to the parents and caregivers who signed their child/ren up to the program, actively fundraised and logged skipping hours. Without your commitment we wouldn’t have been able to reach our school goal and help The Heart Foundation. As a school we raised $7 831 and skipped for 168 hours.
Students who are eligible for a prize, will be receiving it early Term 3. If any of the prizes initially offered to students are no longer available, The Heart Foundation will substitute the prize with a similar product.
Thank you again on behalf of the Student Council for all those who joined in.
Congratulations to our overall champions on their fundraising and skipping efforts.
