Dear parents and carers,
Book Week celebrates Australian children’s literature and promotes the value of books for the education, enjoyment and enlightenment of children. At Carbrook State School and across the nation, children, educators and families last week celebrated Book Week.
Throughout Book Week, children had the opportunity to participate in a range of experiences to celebrate books and learn about authors and illustrators.
As children’s first teachers, families are in an advantageous position to read to their child from birth and in turn positively influence their future educational outcomes. Establishing a regular reading routine enables families and children to form a love for sharing books together. When reading aloud, families form closer bonds and create a nurturing environment, fostering a sense of belonging and wellbeing.
This is how to develop a child’s love of reading at home:
- Make reading part of your everyday routine.
- Ensure children have open access to books.
- Connect with your local library.
- Immerse children in a literacy-rich environment, both indoors and outdoors.
- Provide a comfortable, quiet place to read together.
- Converse with children throughout the story with open-ended questions and descriptive language.
The advantages of regular reading are well documented for both the immediate and long-term positive effects on children’s education, wellbeing, relationships and overall development. Children’s lives are enriched with the inclusion of quality literature together with regular shared reading opportunities with supportive, nurturing adults.
Book Week presented a time to celebrate favourite characters from classics through to contemporary books. Please see photos from our Book Week Parade Wednesday 24 August, along with the students from each class randomly selected to win a book on the day.
Congratulations to our competition winners, who designed a pillow case cover based on this year’s theme, Dreaming with our eyes open. The winners were Layla 5A, Georgina 3A and Louie PB. Congratulations to all who submitted a design.
Happy reading, Sonya Wilson.

WHAT IS A GROWTH MINDSET?
Developing the right mindset early on is crucial for a successful, happy life. When children learn putting in effort and using the right strategies can help them get better at things, they feel empowered, and try harder. When they know their brains are capable of growing, they are more confident, resilient, and not afraid to fail!
We all have beliefs about our own abilities and potential. These beliefs are part of our mindset, which is so powerful they can fuel our behaviour and predict our success. Mindset shapes our everyday lives, helping us interpret our experiences and future possibilities.
A willingness to confront challenges, a passion for learning, and viewing failure as a springboard for growth are all characteristics associated with a growth mindset. Not surprisingly, this type of mindset is strongly linked to greater happiness and achievement in life.
In contrast, those with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence and abilities cannot be altered in a meaningful way. As a result, mistakes are often seen as failures rather than opportunities to grow and learn. When stuck in a fixed mindset, we may fear new experiences, avoid risks, and feel the need to repeatedly prove ourselves over and over again.
Can a person’s mindset change?
Just as someone can grow and develop their intellect, a person is also capable of changing brain functions and their thinking patterns.
Neuroscience shows us that the brain continues to develop and change, even as adults. The brain is similar to plastic in that it can be remoulded over time, as new neural pathways form. This has led scientists to identify the tendency of the brain to change through growth and reorganisation as ‘neuroplasticity’.
Studies have shown the brain can grow new connections, strengthen existing ones, and improve the speed of pulse transmission. These suggest that a person with a fixed mindset can slowly develop a growth mindset.

PBL Term 3 Weeks 7-8
This fortnight our PBL focus has been on Being Respectful: I am respectful to others when I act kindly and use kind words. Students across every year have been practising giving compliments, using kind words and play acting how to show kindness to others.
Some of our key questions have been:
- How will others know that I am kind?
- What will it look like when I am kind?
- What will it sound like when I am kind?
- What will it feel like when I am kind?
At Carbrook we value respectful manners and words, as they help us to build positive relationships and strengthen our community spirit.
Please follow the link below to one of the resources we have used with our classes to generate discussion and understanding of kindness and how to use it.
Kindness is My Super Power
Have a wonderful week 😊

Student Council
R U OK? is a charity with a mission to get everyone having more conversations and to check in with each other to see how they are doing.
It’s about what we can all do to help our friends, classmates and family to get through tough times. The role of asking ‘R U OK?’ and helping someone who is struggling can be played by lots of different people in your life.
When someone is struggling it can be hard for them to reach out. That’s why we call on those around them who might notice, to start the conversation and encourage them to speak about what might be troubling them. This can help people feel like they have a friend supporting them, and prevent small things becoming bigger issues.
By asking R U OK? then listening, encouraging action and checking in, your conversation could change a life. On Thursday 8September we are asking everyone at Carbrook to wear yellow to show the power a conversation can have.
Thank you Student Council

Basketball
Last Thursday and Friday Carbrook State School had a group of Year 6 students and one Year 5 student compete in a basketball tournament against various schools in our district. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and displayed team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Our Carbrook kids represented themselves and their school with pride. Thank you to Mr Reese for organising the participation of our Carbrook kids in this event and to Mrs Simone for supervising our students over the two day competition. What a team effort!!!

I was lucky enough to take ten students to complete in the Basketball Queensland Primary School 3v3 competition. This year we had a boys' and a girls' team. We may not have won but the team spirit and sportsmanship was a joy to see. The students supported each other by watching the other games, cheering and supporting when the game didn’t go their way. The boys placed 22nd overall and the girls placed 10th. Well done Carbrook State School! Tegan Simone
