Acting Principal Sonya Wilson
Dear parents and carers
It is at Mrs Kim Egan’s request that I share her letter of resignation with you.
Mrs Egan has been the guiding hand in building the strong reputation and academic performance of Carbrook State School since 2009. As a school community we would like to formally acknowledge and thank Mrs Egan for her contribution to Carbrook State School. This acknowledgement will take the form of a whole school assembly Friday 18 November at 2:00pm. I appreciate that not everyone will be able to attend this event and encourage those with well wishes to send them to the principal’s email address principal@carbrookss.eq.edu.au and I will forward these to Mrs Egan.
I look forward to continuing in my role as Acting Principal of Carbrook State School until the end of Term 4, 2022.
Warm regards
Sonya Wilson

Main Roads Department Update
School Zones
Roadways Behaviour Monitoring System in selected Queensland school zones: In a world-first road safety initiative, new speed camera technology will soon target speeding drivers at selected school zones across Queensland. Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. It is imperative drivers reduce their speed to the signed 40 km/h speed limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road. Speed cameras will only operate during school zone times at the selected schools. Parents, and carers dropping off or picking up students are urged to comply with school zone speed limits. Those who slow down will not be penalised.

Changes to the Australian Curriculum
The Australian Curriculum; otherwise known as the subjects comprising a course of study in primary and secondary schools, has been under review by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The Australian Curriculum is the national framework for school education in Australia and sets out the learning needs of students from preschool to year 12.
ACARA states that the Australian Curriculum has been in place for some time now, and education ministers agreed it was time that it be reviewed to ensure it continued to meet the needs of students now and into the future.
The national curriculum is due for a review every 6 years, with this most recent review taking place between 2020 and 2021. ACARA’s goal of the changes in the new curriculum was to develop a more 'stripped-back' and 'teachable' curriculum, focusing on 'essential content'.
The new Australian Curriculum (Version 9) has finally been approved by Education Ministers and is available for implementation from the school year 2023 onwards.
Key changes in the F–6 Australian Curriculum include:
- Overall content has been reduced and the duplication of content across learning areas removed to improve the manageability of the F–6 Australian Curriculum.
- The clarity and specificity of the content descriptions and achievements standards have been improved.
- The introductory information about each learning area has been updated and organised under the same sections across all eight learning areas.
- The organisation of content into strands and sub-strands has been streamlined and made more consistent across the eight learning areas.
- Content descriptions and achievement standards have been separated for Foundation year for all eight learning areas, making clear the expectations for students in the important first year of school.
- The consistency and clarity of language and cognitive demand in the content across the learning areas have been improved.
- Content within and across learning areas has been realigned and resequenced to improve the conceptual progression of learning, informed by current research.
NAPLAN 2023 changes
From 2023 NAPLAN testing will move to Term 1 instead of Term 2. It will be held from Wednesday 15 March to Monday 27 March across Australia.
Moving NAPLAN to Term 1 means results will be available earlier and can be used to inform teaching and learning.
NAPLAN testing will occur in Years 3 and 5 at Carbrook State School. Information regarding the specified testing schedule for Carbrook State School will be provided in the new year.
iHUB Fiona Broquesa
SEP is having a name change!
As we continue to move towards a more inclusive model, a number of changes will be occurring over the upcoming weeks and months, the first of which is a name change.
SEP (Special Education Program) will be renamed to the iHUB

As this is a mouthful, we will refer to it as the iHUB.
We kindly ask that you start encouraging the use of the iHUB language as a more inclusive language approach to support in schools that encompasses the wide range of students that are assisted.
STEM Sheri Walls
We have had a wonderful start to the term in STEM! This week all classes started learning about coding. Prep and Year 1 learnt all about algorithms and how important it is to make sure our instructions are correct! We practised following an algorithm to draw a raccoon.
Year 2 learnt about the Spheros – a codable ball. They had lots of fun sending them all around the STEM room!
Year 3 had their first experience with coding using Micro:bits. Students were able to write code to make the Micro:bit display their names.
Year 4A learnt about circuits and how to make a closed circuit by using Makey Makeys. They turned themselves into a piano and were playing beautiful songs to each other. Year 4B have started learning about robotics with the new Lego Spike robotics kits. They started making a dancing robot, which they will finish next week.
Library News
Last term was very busy in the library with Book Week and Book Fair.
Book Fair gave us the chance to have the excitement of a book shop in our very own school. So many happy customers came to purchase books, pens and posters which raised over $2000 worth of books for our library. The library team consulted with students over all year levels as to what books they would like to have available to borrow and these books are now starting to appear in the library. If your child missed out their favourite title at Book Fair – you’re in luck. Issue 7 of Book Club is open now until Thursday October 20. This will be our last Book Club of the year. Order now!
During Book Week there was a ‘Design your own Pillowcase’ competition. Congratulations to the winners for their amazing designs. These pillowcases are on display in the library and the designers will be able to take them home at the end of the term.

Winners of the Design your own Pillowcase competition.
Each year The Children’s Book Council of Australia release a shortlist of books to be judged across 6 different categories. Each category then has a Book of the Year announced. Students at Carbrook had the opportunity during Term 3 to read a collection of these books and then they were able to vote for what they considered Carbrook State School’s Book of the Year. It was a very close competition and finally after multiple counts, Great White Shark written by Claire Saxby and illustrated by Cindy Lane, was announced as Carbrook State School’s Book of the Year. These books are now available to borrow from the library in the TOP PICKS garden. Follow the link to view all the 2022 CBCA winners.

TOP PICKS Garden
The TOP PICKS garden is part of the new library theme - GROW YOUR MIND! Students are encouraged to step out of their literary comfort zone and ‘Grow their Mind’ by trying a new book from Book Fair or maybe an old classic from the ‘Classics’ display. Old classics are often full of adventure, heroes, treasure and discovery.

New books from Book Fair are already starting to appear in the library for children to borrow.
The library is open every second play break for your child to discover their next exciting read to share. If your child would like to borrow any books from the school library, please remind them to bring a clean library bag to protect these amazing reads.
Happy Reading,
The Library Team
