Dear Parents/Carers
As the end of the term and school year quickly draws to a close we celebrate the achievements of 2022 and plan whole school and community events for 2023. This week we have commemorated the graduation of our Year 6 students. This significant milestone was celebrated with a graduation dinner and dancing at Fitzy’s Loganholme on Sunday evening. The students acknowledged significant events of the year including sporting competitions and Maranatha & Recreation Camp, Boulder Creek. Students confirmed that Gala sporting events allowed them to learn how to win with humility and lose with grace while building team skills and sportsmanship. Maranatha & Recreation Camp, Boulder Creek was a wonderful opportunity for students to challenge themselves, build self-confidence and connections with their peers. Individual student achievements were acknowledged at the Graduation Ceremony with awards. Congratulations!
We wish our Year 6 students and their families a fond farewell and know that this is the beginning of the next exciting phase of their lives.
As the Year 6 students handed over their leadership responsibilities, the Year 5 students have selected their leaders for 2023. We are a proud to announce our new student leaders and look forward to viewing their accomplishments and achievements. Students will be inducted in a Badge Ceremony in February 2023. Families will be invited to attend this ceremony as part of our whole school assembly.
Congratulations to our Year 5 student leaders.
The new school year will commence on Monday 23 January 2023. Today, students have had the opportunity to meet their teacher and visit their new classroom with their new classmates. Based on current enrolments we anticipate 15 classes for 2023. The teachers are excited to be meeting their new students.
To facilitate a smooth start to the school year the P&C will again provide the opportunity for families to drop off book packs – Friday 20 January 8:30am-1:00pm in the Under Covered Area. The book packs will then be transported to classrooms in preparation for the first day. This generous offer is designed to make the first day of school a little smoother for families. Thank you P&C for your kindness in arranging this process.
We will welcome to Carbrook State School, Liz Cook as the Deputy Principal replacing Kerry-Ann Reese during her 6-month appointment to Stretton State College.
Please see the letter below from Liz Cook introducing herself to the Carbrook Community.
As you may already be aware, my name is Liz Cook and have been appointed as Deputy Principal for the next six months at Carbrook State School. I have previously worked as a Deputy Principal across three other primary school settings, where I have led a variety of agendas that resulted in successful outcomes for students. My current role as Deputy Principal Education Officer – Teaching and Learning within the South East Regional office, has enabled me to utilise my strengths with the Australian Curriculum as I led the regional Teaching and Learning team to support all 174 schools within the South East Region.
I am very much looking forward to joining the school community of Carbrook State School and working alongside staff, student and parents to continue to great work at the school. You will see me out and about before and after school, connecting with students and parents, so please come up and say hello as I get to know you all.
I wish you all safe and happy holidays and am excited for what 2023 will bring!
We wish all our families a safe and happy holiday and look forward to being back with you in the new year.
Kind regards
Sonya Wilson,
Principal
Deputy Principal Kerry-Ann Reese
Report Cards
Semester Two Report Cards have been provided for all students attending Carbrook State School. These written reports are a culmination of how a child has achieved in their academic studies over a school semester. The report cards contain the following information:
- An overall academic achievement for each subject
- An effort achievement and
- A comment
The student report card template includes:
- Learning areas – each child’s report contains achievement information about each learning area studied. The report may also contain information about extracurricular activities.
- Achievement codes – these codes describe your child’s overall achievement for each learning area studied against what is expected at the time of reporting.
- In Prep a five point scale is used to report achievement in English, Maths, Science and the Humanities and Social Sciences. The five point scale used is: Applying, Making Connections, Working With, Exploring, and Becoming Aware. Comments are used to detail achievement in the areas of Social and Personal Learning, Health and Physical Learning and Active Learning Processes.
- In Years 1–2 the achievement ratings Very High, High, Sound, Developing, Support Required are used.
- In Years 3–10 the achievement ratings of A, B, C, D, E are used.
- Effort and behaviour are reported for your child against a five point scale.
- In Years 3-10 the effort scale is Excellent, Very Good, Satisfactory, Needs Attention and Unacceptable.
- In Years 1-2 the effort scale is Very High, High, Sound, Developing, Support Required.
- Written comments outline what your child has achieved and provide advice on areas for improvement.
- The number of unexplained absences for your child is documented on the report card.
Please be assured that achieving a ‘C’ on the report card is considered a sound level of achievement. In other words, ‘C’ should be acknowledged as achieving at the level expected of an average child at this stage of schooling.
Report cards were distributed on 7 December, 2022 and have been emailed directly to parents. If you have recently changed your email address, please ensure you have updated your details at the office. Please add Application.ONESCHOOL@dete.qld.gov.au to your list of safe senders to ensure report card emails aren’t sent to junk mail. If you did not recieve a copy of your child's report card, please contact your child's teacher to organise one to be sent to you.
Bert Van Manen Outstanding Community Contribution Award 2023
This award has not been acknowledged over the past three years due to COVID interruptions.
However, during this time life has gone on and many quiet achievers have silently gone about their business working for others and contributing to our community. One such member whose dedication, commitment and loyalty to the Carbrook State School community during this three year period has been momentous is Bec Allpress Carbrook State School’s P&C president.
Bec’s dedication, motivation and tireless commitment to representing the school community, fundraising and organising exciting opportunities for our school community has been evident. This has seen our very first Colour Fun Run take place, Movie nights, raffles, Mothers’ day and Fathers’ day stalls and countless other events.
Every time the school has an event the P&C are represented and supportive of the school community. Sometimes this takes the form of morning teas for Pre Prep open days, acknowledgement and celebrating Teachers’ Day, Teacher Aides’ Day and Cleaners’ Day.
When we bid farewell to those of our community that are leaving us, again it is Bec there with the acknowledgement and flowers, making others feel valued and appreciated.
Thank you Bec for tireless dedication and valuable contribution to this school community.
Year 6 Graduation
That’s all Folks!
On Sunday night the Year 6 students, families and teachers celebrated the end of the primary school by attending the Year 6 Graduation night. The night was spectacular with lots of shared laughs, photos and of course a few proud tears. The celebration was capped of by the cohort singing their graduation song titles “Unstoppable” by The Score. The song was selected to represent the cohort’s unstoppable dreams and ability to achieve their goals.
Tuesday was the final parade for 2022 and a chance for the school community to bid farewell to the graduating cohort. The year 6's prep buddies made a guard of honour to send off the students as they entered the hall. Mrs Pettit, Ms Minty and Mrs Simone read speeches dedicated to each class and their time through the year.
The year 6 teacher's would like to wish all of the graduating class of 2022 all the best as they embark on their new journey.

The BUZZ from 4A
This term, the students have enjoyed revisiting their Term 3 novel History Hackers’ Roman Rescue. A story about two children who find themselves teleported back in time to Roman Britain. The text provided a great opportunity to build vocabulary and improve their comprehension. In writing, they worked extremely hard on their persuasive advertisements. In addition to applying powerful persuasive techniques, the students developed their skills in digital literacy and design. Their final presentations were creative and effective.
In Geography the class studied the importance of sustainability, while in Civics and Health they explored the theme of identity and how culture influences behaviour and beliefs. Students created a digital scrapbook and took great pride in presenting an ‘all about me’ to the class. They loved sharing their rich culture and heritage, gaining an appreciation of difference and learning the value of tolerance. In Science, they explored the power of weathering and erosion.
In Mathematics, the students enjoyed learning about angles. They also had the opportunity to consolidate their renaming skills. They took great pleasure in challenging each other in a race for multiplication supremacy and particularly enjoyed symmetrical patterning with hands on materials. All in all, they have worked hard and should be proud of their accomplishments.

A highlight of this term was the Colour Run. Students had so much fun as a rainbow of powder dusted over their happy faces. They squealed with delight as water made the colours run and laughed till they could laugh no more.

What a busy year we have had in the sporting department. Our students have participated in a variety of sporting opportunities this year including: Cross Country, Athletics Carnival, Gala Sport days (Netball, Soccer, Touch, Basketball), 3v3 basketball competitions and many students trialling for district sports teams. Many thanks to the parents and staff that have supported these students throughout the year allowing these opportunities to occur.
I would like to offer a special thank you to some of our community offering up their time.
- Mr Tim Cheeseman who volunteered his time to train our touch football team for their gala day competition.
- Mr Damien Searle who volunteered his time and loaned the school some equipment to allow our year 5 and 6 students to participate in Gala day Volleyball at school.
- Mr Craig Sinclair who volunteered his time and loaned the school some equipment to allow our year 5 and 6 students to participate in Gala day Softball at school
