Dear Parents/Carers
The feedback from the 6-8 February School Review is shared in the infographic below. The document identifies the school’s strengths and areas for improvement.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2091/sw_review.png)
The findings in the review align with the school’s planned improvement strategies as described in the school’s Annual Improvement Plan 2023 (AIP). The three strategies focus on
1: Equity and excellence
Commitment to continuous improvement for staff and student learning, within an inclusive education model
2: Engagement
Strengthen PBL behaviour support processes
3: WELLBEING
Engagement with the Personal and Social Capability.
The condensed AIP below communicates the school’s improvement agenda for 2023, along with the link to the AIP posted on the school’s website.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2092/sw_aip.png)
We are excited to partner with our school community as we continue our improvement journey through the AIP 2023 and later the school’s Strategic Plan which will be informed by the feedback of the School Review and consultation with the school community.

Naplan
Students in Years 3 and 5 have participated in NAPLAN practices in recent weeks. Students were reminded of the need for a healthy breakfast each morning of the NAPLAN testing period 15-22 March. Thank you to Woolworths, who provided a piece of fruit for each of the students in Years 3 and 5 following the NAPLAN practice.

- P&C Annual General Meeting 14 March 2023 at 4:00pm
Deputy Principal - Liz Cook
It has been another busy fortnight at Carbrook State School, with our Year 3 and 5 students engaging with NAPLAN practice tests. These practice test allow the students to experience the online platform prior to the actual tests (commencing from 15 March) and for us as a school to identify any teething problems with technology.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher interviews will occur during Weeks 9 and 10 of this term, commencing from 20 March until 30 March. This opportunity provides both teachers and parents/carers to partner and discuss your child’s progress at school so far this year, identifying their areas of strength and their next steps for learning.
The online portal for parents to book a time slot to meet with their child/ren’s class teacher will become live from 10 March until 17 March. A link to the online booking system will be email to parents/carers on the 10 March.
I encourage all parents/carers to take this opportunity to meet with their child/ren’s class teacher to continue to support your child’s success at their schooling.
Have a great fortnight,
Liz Cook
PBL - Hayley Pattison
At Carbrook State Sschool our fortnightly PBL focus is explicitly taught in all classrooms at an allocated time each week with the focus being referred to on parade, school Facebook page and the school Newsletter. Each lesson is aligned to the Explicit Teaching Model which allows teachers to demonstrate the desired focus behaviour, students to practice and teachers to provide feedback on the students demonstrating the desired behaviour.
Explicit Teaching Model
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2081/pbl.png)
This fortnight our PBL focus is ‘Be responsible: I will sit and wait to be dismissed from my eating area to walk to play.’ Students have been working hard with the PBL focus by practising the correct way to be dismissed from their eating area. Lower school have been doing a brilliant job in the undercover area by ensuring their lunchboxes are packed away, rubbish is in the bin and they are sitting and waiting to be dismissed by the teacher. Upper school have been practising this skill outside their classrooms and are also doing a wonderful job. Keep up the hard work Carbrook Kids!
Have a wonderful week!

Over the recent weeks, all year levels across the school have been engaging in weekly social skills lessons. The Year 6 cohort’s lessons so far have been based on interest levels and the personal and social capability continuum for this age group. We have started the year off by working with the AusIdentities program. This program uses personality profiling to create a personal awareness of differences in the way people approach school (work), life and learning.
Both classes participated in a quiz that allocated them an animal – an eagle, dolphin, wombat or kangaroo. These animals possess certain qualities that will predominately govern a person’s most suited learning style. The animals immediate overarching characteristics are:
The Eagle – mastery, challenge and independence
The Dolphin – kindness, peace and harmony
The Wombat – order, certainty and closure
The Kangaroo - action, variety and fun
The Year 6 students can easily identify with and explain their animal type and the ways in which parts of their personality align.
Lessons at the present time reflect hands-on activities where students engage with the same animals, therefore, the same students, week to week, to experience success in social contexts.
Below are some images of the Year 6 groups participating in teacher-planned activities best suited to their social and emotional interests when it comes to play and interaction.

PLM - Lara McDonald
We have been busy as usual in PLM. In Literacy, we have been learning our sounds through many engaging activities, such as making a volcano, collage, painting and even digging for treasure in our sandpit! In Numeracy, we have been focusing on counting, recognising and ordering numbers from one to ten. The students particularly enjoyed building the numbers with blocks, and making numbers with playdoh. The class is also getting very good at transitioning quickly and quietly around the school for specialist lessons. Well done PLM students!

Year 2 Life Cycles
During Term 1 in Year 2, we are studying life cycles. Students have been working very hard on researching many different animals to write an Information Report for English and we have been lucky enough to witness the metamorphosis of some classroom pets again! We currently have mealworms that are slowly becoming pupa before they transform into Darkling Beetles.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2085/2ak.jpg)
Year 2 also welcomed their newest class pets this week. Six Orchard Swallowtail caterpillars! Previously we have witnessed the metamorphosis of Monarch Caterpillars so this year the students are thrilled to see a different variety of caterpillars. These little creatures will become a beautiful butterfly with a wingspan of 15cm and are coloured like this to help them camouflage like bird poop on the leaves of citrus plants.

PE - Melissa Dillon
A reminder that our school cross country is being held on Tuesday 7 March 2024. Students across Prep to Year 6 have the opportunity to run. Please see letter below to explain the running distances.
Students will assemble at their classroom, mark rolls and move to the oval with their teachers at 9.05am.
Students are encouraged to wear their sports house colours. They need to remember to bring a hat and a water bottle and before coming to school to apply their sunscreeen at home.
A reminder for students in Years 3 - 6, to participate in the event they must return a signed permission slip which was previously sent out with information about this event. If no signed premission slip is returned for a Year 3 - 6 student, they will not be able to participate.
Arts - Kat Boobyer
Off to a flying start, students have certainly delivered in the creativity department! Preps have been experimenting with the use of line and colour to tell their own four-frame story of a sandcastle being built (and destroyed). We now turn our hand to shape and collage as they tell a story from their own imagination.

Year 1 and 2 artists have been busy experimenting with emotions, taking very emotive selfies and then manipulating colour and line to create a painted background to match. These stunning artworks will be on full display during the celebration of learning taking place later in the year, as will their triumphant Paula do Prado-inspired pastel-on-photo portraits from last week.

Dancers from Years 3 and 4 have learned a traditional Japanese Bon Dance and are now in the process of choreographing their own segment of their group’s larger dance celebrating that joyful occasion we all have in common - the Summer holidays!

Library News
This fortnight Carbrook State School was involved in a competition run by Queensland School Library Association (QSLA). PREP – Year 2 students were encouraged to enter a drawing or painting to show, ‘What do you love about your school library? Students in Year 3-6 were able to unleash their imagination with a photo or artwork inspired by the theme, School Libraries Devoted to You.
Thank you to all students who created an art piece to show how much they enjoy our library at Carbrook. Only one entry per category was able to be submitted from our creative Carbrook Kids.
Congratulations to Asha, Year 6 and Evie, Year 2. Your art pieces have been entered into the QSLA state wide competition. We wish you both the best of luck with your entries.
Look out for Asha and Evie at Monday’s parade as they will be receiving a shout out for their amazing entries.

Every Day Counts
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2043/every_day_counts.gif)
Parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day. Being at school every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.
Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year.
Late arrivals and early pickups at school – We are seeing a number of students arriving late or being picked up early from school. Attendance at school every day gives your child the best opportunity to do well. Just a little bit doesn’t seem much but……..
