Dear Parents and Carers
School Carpark after school
Thank you to families for your assistance with the school carpark and the movement of traffic through the pick-up zone each afternoon. With the change to exiting via the second gate, vehicles have been moving quickly through the area reducing the wait time for collection. Special acknowledgement of our students too, who have been watching and waiting for their parent's cars and proceeding promptly to the gate to wait and transition safely to their vehicles.
Logan City Council have provided brochures, regarding carpark expectations, please find copies included in this newsletter and on display in the under cover area.
Changes in the OSHC – YMCA location in the school
Over the past weeks we have been in consultation with OSHC - YMCA to relocate the service within the school. From the commencement of Term 2, OSHC will be based in the Prep Demountable and the hall. The alternative space will provide OSHC with a dedicated kitchen and office space, a quiet area with a homelier feel and an alternative open indoor space for movement games in the hall.
Access for drop off and collection with occur through the Prep Demountable with access via the carpark directly in front of the Administration building on Beenleigh Redland Bay Road. The OSHC will continue to have access to the playgrounds and outdoor play areas before and after school. With the additional space the school has requested that the students transition to school in a manner similar to those arriving at school and waiting in the undercover area, this means using the hall space for OSHC students to sit in cohort groups with something to lock their eyes, such as rubrics cubes, cards, colouring-in or a book to read. This will provide students with an opportunity to settle and focus prior to transitioning to class. For those students requiring a quieter transition they will be able to access the Prep Demountable and a dedicated chill space assisting their transition to class.
Proposed Reporting Changes
Two scheduled meetings have been offered, before and after school, for the purpose of consulting with parents regarding planned changes to report cards.
The proposed changes include
- A descriptor in each key learning area describing the learning undertaken and how the students have been assessed. The achievement rating will communicate students’ achievement, and an effort rating will be provided. The comment on individual student attainment will be removed.
- General comments will continue to be personalised for each child, communicating as was the model for Semester 2 in 2022, a comment relating to student engagement in learning, an area of strength, and an area of improvement and a concluding comment will be provided.
- Behaviour comments will report on student demonstration of the school values, be safe, be responsible, be respectful and be a learner, in the classroom and playground context.
Feedback from parents via the attached Academic Reporting: Written Report Cards survey would be appreciated as we seek to finalise and implement these changes for the next reporting period at the end of Term 2.
Wishing families, a safe and happy holiday, we look forward to catching up in Term 2.
Kind regards
Sonya Wilson

And just like that, Term 1 2023 comes to an end today!
The last two weeks of the term have been busy, with the teachers taking on the role of learners and engaging in curriculum and planning days lead by myself. This professional learning opportunity provided teachers to collaboratively dive deeper into their planning for Term 2 and the Australian Curriculum to strengthen the clarity of the content that will be taught and assessed for the remainder of Semester 1.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Carbrook State School for a fabulous first term as Deputy Principal and wish you all a safe and relaxing break with your loved ones over the holiday period. I look forward to returning refreshed in Term 2 for another successful term.
Kind regards,
Liz Cook

iHUB News - Year 4
This Term, Year 4 has been engaging in a social skills program focused on self-awareness and social awareness. Students have explored the influence that our own behaviour has on the emotional responses of others. They have also identified the positive and negative emotions that we can feel in the classroom and playground, and described the influence that people, situations and events can have on their own and others’ emotions. The students are working together to investigate how emotional responses can vary in depth and strength, and identify how their actions can have a positive effect on others.
It has been encouraging to watch the students engage so enthusiastically in some of the following lessons:
- Silent ball, ship/shore game, life raft game, bean bag toss – games to learn honesty, collaboration, team work and reflect on our emotions.
- Role play – what do different emotions look like?
- Rating our emotions on an ‘emotions thermometer’.
- Creating positive intentions or goals for our class and for ourselves.
We look forward to more positive learning opportunities next term as we build well-developed social and emotional skills.

SORA
This year we have signed up again to the Education Queensland E-Library called SORA.
SORA is a state of the art reading experience that gives students the opportunity to access a wide variety of e-books such as comic books, graphic novels, picture books and more.
Selected texts also have professional narrations so the students can follow along with the text.
SORA also has the ability to adjust settings to different font styles (Including dyslexic font), font size and lighting settings too.
The flyers below show how to access SORA at home on an tablet or computer.
Arts - Kat Boobyer
This fortnight students are reflecting on their artworks created or performed.
Below is just a small sample of the emotive self-portraiture students in Years 1 and 2 (and the 2/3s) have produced. All the fabulous works will be yours for the viewing during our Celebration of Learning in Term 3. But for now, I think it best if I just let the art do the talking!
PLM - Lara McDonald
The Preps have had a wonderful finish to Term 1. We are continuing to work on our social skills. The students have particularly enjoyed balloon relays. Thank you for providing the fruit for our Maths patterns, another activity enjoyed by the students.
Happy and safe Easter!
Year 6
Shailer Park State High School Visit
On Wednesday 29 March the Year 6 students were visited by Mrs Kate Isager (Deputy Principal Junior Secondary) and three past Carbrook State School students (Zach, Gowan and Alexis) from Shailer Park State High School. Some Year 6 Carbrook students remembered Zach, Gowan and Alexis as their Year 6 Buddies when they were in Prep.
During the visit Mrs Isager spoke about high school in general and some specific opportunities offered at Shailer Park High. Zach, Gowan and Alexis were then asked a variety of questions by our students around high school and their experience.
It was a great opportunity for all of our Year 6 students to get a picture of their continued learning journey after they graduate from Carbrook and hear the experience of students who have been in their position before. There will more opportunities throughout the year to connect to the high schools in our area so keep an eye out for updates in the coming terms.
Gala Day
Gala Day is a combined school's sports day where the some Year 5 and 6 students travel to other distinations to play team sports. Students who stay at Carbrook play team sports on the oval. We will add more photos to our newsletter as they come available.
Ditto Show
Prep to Year 3 students, had a special visit from our good friend 'Ditto' this week.
Ditto is our Brave Bear who helps deliver the important message about ‘Private Parts’ in a Personal Safety Education program.
Ditto reinforced the importance of safe and unsafe feelings and private parts. If we have an unsafe feeling we need to ‘run and tell someone’.
Year 2’s were especially lucky as they got to have their own photo with Ditto himself!
