STAY WELL THIS WINTER
Recent media updates have reported a number of Covid cases in the community. Carbrook State School has also had some cases reported already this season.
Colds, flu and other respiratory illnesses are more common and contagious during the winter months. This is a timely reminder to keep up healthy hygiene habits in order to protect you and your family from these viruses.

Dear Parents and Carers
At Carbrook State School on Friday 26 May, we acknowledge National Sorry Day and from 27 May to 3 June, National Reconciliation Week. Our focus for these two events is to recognise and redress a confusion that has occurred at Carbrook State School in acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the school is situated. Previously, we have acknowledged at the commencement of our assembly that the school is situated on the shared Country of the Quandamooka and Gugingin Peoples, and in years past the Jagera Peoples. However, further discussions with these groups have indicated this to be inaccurate.
Members of our school’s newly appointed First Nations Committee Erica Witt, Tegan Simone, Julianne Lee, Kat Boobyer and Geraldine Hunt have researched and reached out to local Elders in an attempt to gather accurate information. Through research they have met with Shaun Davies, a Knowledge Holder of Aboriginal Language, Custom and History. Shaun has informed the Committee that there is currently a claim for recognition of Country on the northern side of the Logan River in the area that Carbrook State School is located. This region is the traditional land of the Gugugan (Goo-goo-gun) - Black Possum People. Shaun advises that the reference to Black Possum People refers to the prevalence of a particular breed of black brushtail possum endemic to the area. The possums were known for their large size and thick hide, which were particularly useful for making drums.
Explaining to the students this change when acknowledging the traditional custodians, is how we as adults demonstrate to our students that we are all life-long learners and that when we have new information we act on it. This is another way we can engage in National Reconciliation Week. This new knowledge has been shared with staff and students.
At assembly on Monday, Shaun shared this information with the school community along with the Yugambeh greeting Jingeri and how this welcome relates to a story of the willy-wagtail. The willy-wagtail went to all the animals telling them that the brown snake wanted to fight and as he went to each of the animals he called out “Jingeri!” The story continued on much to the enjoyment of the students present. In the Carbrook area the presence of a willy-wagtail can signal news, or a message is on its way. Since Shaun shared this story with the students at assembly, Jingeri has been added to our digital sign and has been adopted in some classes as they mark the roll each morning as a way of greeting their teacher. The Acknowledgement to Country at assembly now states:
I acknowledge the Gugugan Peoples of the Yugambeah Language Region as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which my school is built. I pay my respects to Elders past, present, and emerging and recognise their continuing connection to Country and ways of learning.
First Nations Committee will continue to meet each term and welcomes interested parents to join and contribute to this committee through their representation at meetings. If this is of interest to you, please contact Erica Witt our committee chair ewitt13@eq.edu.au .
Kind regards,
Sonya Wilson

Throughout Reconciliation Week, Carbrook students in all year levels will attempt the Yugambeh Language Challenge. They will learn one new word on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and then on Friday they will get to see if they can remember all four. Here are the words and their English meanings so you can join in the challenge, too!

As always, time is going by very quicky as we approach Week 7 of the term next week.
Last week you would have received your child/ren’s Consolidation Sprint certificate outlining their success and what they may be working towards of their goal for the last cycle. The new cycle has commenced this week, and your child/ren’s class teacher will communicate the new goals for the next sprint. Consolidation Sprints are focussed on providing further teaching and practice of discrete numeracy skills (literacy skills for Prep) that will support or extend the curriculum demands that are being focussed on for a unit of work.
Life Education
Over the last couple of weeks, the Life Education Program has visited our school, delivering lessons to each class. I woulld like to acknowledge and thank the P&C once again for their generous contribution of $11 per student, providing every student at Carbrook State School the opportunity to engage in this unique and well-respected program that has serviced Queensland Schools for decades.
2AK loved their experienced so much, they have kindly shared their thoughts of their lesson, along with some other photos taken from a varity of classes to capure the learning that took place.

Year 2AK’s visit to Life Education
The Life Education team visited Carbrook State School last week and 2AK really enjoyed their visit. We learnt about ‘Safety Rules’ and ‘Healthy Choices’.
Harold and his friends helped children to problem solve with focuses on:
- recognising safe and unsafe environments
- how to care for others
- behaviours that maintain friendships
- places and people who we can go to for help
The show was very interactive and the children had a great time getting to meet Harold!

Under 8's Day
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2471/ued2.png)
It has been a while since Carbrook State School has been able to participate in Under 8's Week, but last Wednesday, Prep to Year 3 students were able to have a fun-filled morning celebrating being young. While some of our Year 2-3 students may no longer be 8, we included them as they have not had the opportunity to participate in an Under 8's Day at Carbrook State School. School Staff, Year 6 students and YMCA OSHC staff organised a range of acitivies around the theme, Play - You, Me and Our Communities. Some of our local Early Childhood Education and Care Centres also joined us for part of the morning. By the smiles and laughter, all students appeared to have a great morning either playing with the parachutte, lego or BeeBots, making kites and crowns, bubble blowing and playing with playdough, painting and glueing, and playing in the sandpit or with musical instruments, just to name a few activities. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents, carers or grandparents who came along to assist and joined in the fun. We would also like to thank our local ECEC staff and children who came along and our Year 6 students for lending a helping hand. A very special thank you to Mrs Turgeon for organising the event and the other staff who assisted her.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 24 May, the whole school took part in National Simultaneous Storytime. Over 2.18million people in over 59,000 different places took part in this year’s story time and we joined in as well! This year’s book was, ‘The Speedy Sloth’ written by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. The event was held in New South Wales and read by Rebecca live online. Fifteen lucky students, one from each class, were randomly selected to receive their very own copy of this book. Congratulations to these students.

Over the past few weeks, our Year 5 and 6 students have been engaged in a thrilling journey of exploration and learning, using the cutting-edge LEGO Spike Prime kits. In our Robotics Club, students have embarked on a series of challenges and projects that have honed their creativity and critical thinking skills. From constructing basic structures to designing intricate mechanisms, our young engineers have explored the limitless possibilities of the LEGO Spike Prime kits.
The LEGO Spike Prime kits have revolutionized the way our students approach robotics. These innovative sets are specifically designed to introduce young learners to the captivating world of engineering, programming, and problem-solving. The kits combine LEGO bricks, electronic components, and a user-friendly programming interface to empower students to build and control their own robots. One of the most impressive aspects of the LEGO Spike Prime kits is their versatility. Students have had the opportunity to construct a variety of robots, each serving a unique purpose.
However, building robots is just the beginning. Next, the students will dive into the fascinating world of programming, using a block-based coding language that seamlessly integrates with the LEGO Spike Prime kits. They will learn to program their robots to perform specific actions, respond to sensors, and even engage in dynamic challenges.
Keep an eye out for more updates on the remarkable accomplishments of our students as they continue to push the boundaries of robotics! Our next project involves solving a Rubik’s Cube and we can’t wait to show you or work!

Carbrook's Got Talent
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2444/5.gif)
This term, the Community Committee will be hosting Carbrook’s Got Talent. After the positive feedback from last year, we have decided to again view videos in the classroom. The competition opens on Monday 15May 2023. We are hoping to see a large range of talents again this year.
If your child/ren want to enter, please submit a video of your child/ren showing off their talent to Mrs Simone at tssin0@eq.edu.au or to your child’s class teacher to pass on. This could be handed in on a USB or emailed to Mrs Simone by the Friday 16 June 2023. We are looking for all types of talents like singing, dancing, movie making, magic, acting or even showing off sporting skills.

Library News
It has been fantastic to see so many students borrowing and enjoying reading in the library during second play break. In addition to borrowing and reading, students have requested other activities to enjoy with their friends.
They asked, so we listened! Starting this week, the Library Captains and the Year 6 Student Council have organised a timetable of activities for each day of the week that they will be facilitating. Students will now be able to enjoy creative drawing, chess, origami, board games and storytime during second break.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2449/lib_9.png)
MONDAY is drawing day, where students can unleash their art skills.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2456/drawing.jpg)
CHESS TUESDAY students can bring a friend to “checkmate”.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2465/chess.png)
WEDNESDAY origami is another day of creativity where Josh from year 6
will be teaching the ancient art of paper folding.
THURSDAY will be action packed with boardgames, big and small set up
inside and outside of the library.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/2459/vintage_game_boards_1_.webp)
FICTION FRIDAY is a bit slower paced when we will dim the lights and
enjoy listening to George’s Marvellous Medicine read by Katie in year 6.

In other library news, we now have a new, unique art piece hanging on the floor in the library. The colourful Campfire rug has created an inviting, central place in our library to gather and share stories around the imaginary ‘campfire’. We have received many positive comments from the students that it looks, ‘awesome’ and it feels ‘nice, soft and comfortable’ to lie and read on.
