Principal-Sonya Wilson

Dear Parents and Carers,
The time has come for the school to review the contractual arrangements with the School Locker as the provider of school uniforms for Carbrook State School. Members of the P&C have met with a representative from the School Locker to discuss arranging a temporary extension of six months so that feedback can be sought from our school community on this arrangement and to review uniform guidelines. Points to be considered include:
- The accessibility and service that parents receive from the School Locker
- Quality and cost of the products purchased from the School Locker
- Uniform guidelines
Carbrook State School has a dress code, that has been endorsed by the Carbrook State School P&C. The school uniform of Carbrook State School is designed to carter for the elements of safety, comfort, climate, modesty, cost efficiency, social equity and activity. The wearing of the school uniform,
- gives all students a sense of personal pride in their own appearance,
- encourages identification with the school and promotes school spirt and a sense of community,
- reduces distractions caused by variations of dress and grooming, and
- minimises or eliminates discrimination caused by differences in socio-economic status.
I must compliment the parents and the students on how they support the school's Dress Code and how the students present to school each day.
Expectations as per current School Dress Code
All students are expected to observe the details of correct attire and must be wearing the complete dress uniform or sports uniform in accordance with school routine. Students should present in a neat and tidy manner at all times, including on their way to and home from the school. This high standard will ensure that our students continue to represent themselves and the school in an outstanding way. Below is an extract from Carbrook State School's Dress Code policy. We have recieved feedback that there are some confusions with the items listed for new parents.

The uniform for girls is described as black divided skirt or black culottes and in winter tights, but not leggings. The second uniform option is black shorts.
The sports uniform for girls and boys is shorts, polo neck shirt in house colours.
There seems to be no issues with the uniform options for boys, as boys are generally complying with the described expectations. However, the girls in the older grades are electing to wear short sports shorts rather than the uniform described above.
It is our intention for the expectations to be clearer to families and students and for the uniform to be modest, safe and comfortable. We do want to consider the preference of shorts worn by girls and to make the uniform unisex.
School uniform guidelines (School Dress Code) will be discussed at our upcoming P&C meeting, 14 June at 4:00pm. This along with other topics will inform discussions, if you have ideas to contribute we would welcome your presence to the meeting.
Kind regards,
Sonya Wilson

It was fantastic to see so many family members attend our Sport’s Day on Wednesday this week. The day was filled with many smiles and it truly was an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Reporting
On Wednesday of Week 10 (21 June 2023) you will receive your child/ren’s Semester One report card. This will be emailed to the email address that you have provided to the school. If these details are not accurate, please contact the school to complete an update of your personal details.
The report will provide you with information of your child’s academic achievements against a five-point scale for each learning area that has been taught and assessed over the last two terms. The report will also indicate an effort grade for each learning area.
This year, we have made some changes to the comments sections of the report card. These changes have been based on consultations with staff and community. Thank you to the parents who responded to the survey asking for your feedback. A summary of the feedback from parents was:
- Provide details of what the chid has learned so far
- How the child is tracking against the expected standards of behaviour at the school
- A positive achievement and a goal to work on
- The use of parent-friendly language
- General statements about how the child is progressing and goals to work towards
After analysing and considering the feedback we received from all stakeholder, the following changes will be shown in the Semester One report for your child/ren:
Learning Areas
You will be provided with a brief comment in each Learning Area outlining the teaching and learning opportunities your child has has engaged in during the semester. This comment is aligned to information already provided to you in each term’s curriculum newsletter.
Behaviour
A behaviour grade and comment will also be included in the report for Years 1 -6. This has been determined using a whole school behaviour matrix based on our four expectations of behaviour; Be respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be a Learner.
The behaviour comment will provide a positive statement and how this has been demonstrated and also a growth statement outlining what your child is working towards with their behaviour.
General Comment
This comment will be personalised for your child and will provide you with the following information:
- A positive comment about your child as a learner
- Strengths your child has demonstrated as a learner
- Improvement goal in a particular learning area
- Absenteeism comment (if applicable)
- Final comment about your child
There will be another opportunity to meet with your child’s class teacher to discuss their academic, behavioural and social and emotional progress in Term 3. If you have anything you would like clarified further in your child’s Semester One report card, please contact your child’s class teacher to arrange an appointment.
Enjoy the last fortnight of Term 2!

Student Council
Queensland Day
This year for Queensland Day the Student Council held a free dress day to raise money for Cancer Council. At the start of the year the Student Council Members nominated different charities they would like to fundraise for throughout the year. The members chose Cancer Council as some of their family members had been affected by cancer. Together we raised $427.10. This also was a good reminder for students to Slip, Slop, Slap which is our bell song for transitioning out to play.
Carbrook’s Got Talent
Thank you to all the wonderful entries into this year's Carbrook’s Got Talent Contest. In Week 9 classes will be able to view the entries and the winners will be announced at parade in Week 10.

In Week 10, the Senior competition will be held for the Years 4, 5 and 6. The winners from both competitions will be nominated in Nova’s Handball Blitz Competition.

Sports Day

A big thank you to all the parents and family members who could come to Sports Day. There were lots of smiles, cheering each other on and students trying their best. Thank you to Mrs Dillion for organising and facilitating, Mr Gaunt for assisting in setting up and packing up and the Teachers and Teacher Aides for running activities and supervising the students.

ARTS - Kat Boobyer

Students studying visual arts this semester have now spent a number of lessons on creating their emotive weather collages. Step one was great fun, learning to use salt to create texture with watercolours for their backgrounds. Now that the collaged elements have been added to the foreground, I think you’ll agree we have some very talented and creative artists at Carbrook State School!

Dancers in Years 3 and 4 have fully choreographed and polished their strong man story dances, with dramatic and humorous results. The Year 5 and 6 dancers have crafted their landscape dances from start to finish and performed for their classmates. Some have already had the chance to see what impact stage lighting can have on the mood of their performance, which is good to know ahead of next semester’s drama studies.
All students from Years 1 - 6 have been invited to join in easy dance sessions outside the library on Thursday mornings from 8:30 until the bell. I have been impressed by the enthusiasm shown by the growing number of students coming on down and trying out dances like “The Penguin”, the usual party classics and a couple of fresh numbers like “Best Day of my Life”. I look forward to our next Turn-it-out Thursday!
iHUB

This term our Prep students started Literacy Sprints. This occurs everyday for one hour and there are four rotations tasks that the students engage in.
The rotations are:
Reading:
Students have been learning about the concepts of prints and decoding. The whisper phones have been a huge hit and the students have loved hearing themselves reading through the phones.

Writing:
Students started the term off learning how to form the letters of the alphabet correctly. We are now starting to write sentences with three – five words, based on consonant-vowel-consonant words and high frequency words they have been reading in the decodable readers.

PMAP:
PMAP stands for “Prep Metalinguistic Awareness Program”. Metalinguistic skills are the skills we use to think about language. These include understanding words, using syllables, identifying rhymes, creating rhymes, identifying the first and last sounds of words and segmenting all of the sounds in words.

iPads:
Students independently engage in Literacy apps reinforcing the skills learnt during the other three rotations.

Library

Welcome Carbrook Community to Week 8 news from the library. Our library has been a hive of activity the past week with many daily activities being enjoyed by our students. It’s a warm inviting space where everyone is welcome to either just sit on a comfy couch to read or head to our activity area where the students can engage in board games, drawing, origami and chess. Friday is our chill out day where you can sit back, relax and listen to a reading of an all-time classic, George’s Marvellous Medicine.
In more exciting news, thanks to the amazing support from the school community and Scholastic Book Club, the library will be purchasing MANY new books for the students to enjoy, across all genres. They should be hitting the shelves early next term, so let your little readers know to keep an eye out for one of the books seen below as well as many more.
Speaking of next term, we will be holding our Magnificent Book Fair once again. This is wonderful news as last year it was a highlight for the students who enjoyed it immensely. Book Fair enables the library to be re-stocked with countless new books for their enjoyment. As a result of Book Fair on our calendar, we will not be distributing our regular Book Club brochure next term.
It is fantastic to see the enjoyment on the faces of the children and the way in which they follow our Library expectations and values. Our appreciation goes out to all Year 6 students for giving up their play time to help facilitate this initiative.
Yours in reading
The Library Team.

Year 3 Wild Rangers
On Tuesday 30 May, students from 2/3DK, 3AP and 3SB were fortunate to engage with native wildlife through the Wild Rangers program. They learned about the different characteristics and adaptations of animals within the reptile, mammal and bird groups. Topics covered included animal diets, habitats and appearance. Students were able to share their knowledge about living and non-living things.
Students were lucky enough to touch and hold a blue tongue lizard, a bearded dragon, a long-necked turtle, a python, baby salt-water crocodile, tawny frogmouth and a flying squirrel glider. They had an amazing time and learned many new facts that will help them in their Science and Writing units of learning this term which focus on living and non-living things and creating information reports about Australian animals.
