Dear Parents/Caregivers
The School Strategic Plan is the school’s succinct statement to its community about what the school wants to achieve in the future and how it plans to get there. The current draft priorities proposed for the Strategic Plan 2024-2027 draws on the key improvement recommendations from the School Review conducted in February 2023. The four priority areas align to Education Queensland’s Strategic Plan Equity and Excellence.
Carbrook State School’s draft Strategic Plan describes these four key priorities. Priority 1 and 2 focuses on Curriculum, what is taught, assessed and reported on and how it is taught. Priority 3, Student Wellbeing and Engagement focuses on Positive Behaviour for Learning as well as teaching social skills aligned to the Personal and Social Continuum from the Australian Curriculum. Priority 4, Culture and Inclusion continues our inclusion model of in class support and developing staff and student cultural knowledge and understanding.
School priority 1: Educational Achievement - Curriculum
Further develop teacher knowledge of the Australian Curriculum (AC) and understanding of P-12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework (P-12 CARF) requirements to inform curriculum design and delivery, as the school transitions to Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum and the updated P-12 Framework requirements.
Refine the whole-school curriculum assessment and reporting plan to ensure horizontal and vertical alignment and consistency across the three levels of planning within the Australian Curriculum.
School priority 2: Educational Achievement – Pedagogies and Processes
Embed processes of the Professional Learning Teams (PLT) to further develop staff capability around curriculum, teaching and learning to continue to lift student academic outcomes.
Develop moderation processes at multiple junctures to share expectations regarding student learning, align unit plans with assessment tasks, and ensure consistent and accurate reporting.
Review and refine school-wide pedagogical approaches, including established practices and new pedagogies to consolidate teacher expertise with an explicit focus on the Science of Reading.
School priority 3: Student Wellbeing and Engagement - PBL
Strengthen behaviour support processes and a culture that promotes learning.
Develop systematic processes for attendance monitoring, follow up and support, including students from priority groups, to decrease the number of students attending school less than 85%.
Reinforce the rebranded Quality Habits – Resilience, Effective Communication, Self-Awareness, Being a Problem Solver, Empathy and Understanding, and Develeoping a Growth Mindset. These Habits support a positive school culture and help to embed social skills aligned to the Personal and Social Continuum.
School priority 4: Culture and Inclusion
Collaboratively build the inclusion teacher role to work alongside class teachers in planning and delivering differentiated teaching and learning.
Develop processes at the unit planning level to determine and document student differentiation.
Utilise the inclusive teams’ model to provide a balance of whole-class, small-group and individual learning options for engaging learners in multiple ways, documented in unit plans.
Progress the work of the Indigenous Committee to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in the school for improved learning and wellbeing outcomes of all students.
We have sought input from the school staff on these planned priorities and encourage the community to share ownership of the strategic direction of the school and future successes. Parents encouraged to share their feedback by email to principal@carbrookss.eq.edu.au
ThinkUKnow
On Friday 1 December the Year 5 and 6 cohorts are participating in the ThinkUKnow cybersafty presentation. ThinkUKnow Australia is an evidence-based education program led by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), delivered nationally in partnership with police and industry partners.
Children and young people receive education directly from influencers in their lives, including parents, carers, teachers and police. Resources encourage critical thinking and learnings to prevent harm, to identify safe or unsafe situations and know when and how to seek help. In-school presentations are delivered by State and Territory police to build positive engagement between children, young people and police, while equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be able to take actionable steps to maintain their safety at all times.
Kind regards
Sonya Wilson

Fire Ant Information
Fire ants
Fire ants continue to be located on the school grounds and have been treated by dedicated professionals.
Fire ants are a pest that can have a big impact on native environments and our way of life. They have a painful, fiery sting which, in rare cases, can cause severe allergic reactions.
What do they look like?
Fire ants can be identified by a few distinguishing features. They are:
- copper brown in colour with a darker abdomen
- quite small at 2 to 6 millimeters
- found in a variety of sizes within the one nest.
For help with identifying fire ants, visit Fire Ant Eradication. You can view the fire ant identification video and photo gallery. You can also see some ant species that are often mistaken for fire ants.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3144/fire_ants.png)
Nests
Fire ant nests can appear as dome-shaped mounds or be flat and look like a small patch of disturbed soil. All nests have no obvious entry or exit holes. When checking suspicious ant nests gently poke the nest with a long stick and observe the ants that come out. Be careful not to get too close, as fire ants are aggressive. They swarm when disturbed and have a painful sting.
Our role
Everyone leads the efforts to find, contain and destroy fire ants in South East Queensland.
We support by:
- reporting fire ant nests
- reducing the risks to the community and environments
- supporting the Fire Ant Suppression Taskforce with a collaborative approach.
Reporting fire ants
If you find fire ants in your property, contact the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) on 13 25 23. The faster you report, the less chance there is of fire ants becoming a problem and spreading.
You can report fire ants on the National Fire Ant Eradication Program website.
The Fire Ant Eradication Program map shows sites in Queensland that have had fire ants in the last 12 months.

It has been another great fortnight at Carbrook State School. Our students have been working hard as learners and are starting to complete their summative assessments for the term. I look forward to seeing our community at tomorrow night’s movie night.
Toys at school
As you are aware, we ask our students to bring a quiet activity to lock their eyes into before school from 8:30am in the undercover area. These activities could be; colouring in, a book to read or some standard playing cards. Over the last couple of weeks some students have brought toys and trading cards (Pokemon). As these items have the potential to cause disruption to learning throughout the day and also pose the risk of being damaged or stolen, we are asking for these items to remain at home. We thank you in advance for your support with this issue.
Kind regards,
Liz Cook

QParents
What is QParents?
QParents is an online portal that provides a convenient new way for parents to communicate with their child’s school. As a parent, you can view your child’s student information and also submit changes to some of their details. The information that can be viewed includes timetables, report cards, attendance records and timely access to invoices and payment details. Parents can also update their child’s details, pay invoices online, and let the school know of changes to normal routine, such as when their child is unwell or has to leave early.
Why is it being introduced?
QParents has been designed to offer an online hub where parents can access essential information about their students, their activities and their performance at school. It saves time, and will provide anytime, anywhere accessibility using a PC, smart phone or tablet.
Thank you!
Thank you to all those parents who have already registered for QParents. We currently have 23% of our school registered and using QParents! We would love to see this percentage above 50% before the end of the year. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access their child’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately, or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au

eSafety
In today's digital age, the internet has become an integral part of our students' lives, both as a learning tool and a social platform. However, with this increased access comes the responsibility of ensuring our children's safety online. eSafety refers to the practice of navigating the web securely, making smart and respectful decisions, and understanding the implications of online activity.
To promote eSafety, we urge parents and guardians to engage in open conversations with their children about their online experiences. It is essential to discuss the importance of keeping personal information private, recognizing cyberbullying, and being aware of the content they share and consume.
Our school is committed to educating our students about digital citizenship, implementing robust internet safety policies, and providing resources for both students and parents. We believe that a combined effort between our teachers, students, and their families will create a safer online environment for everyone.

iHUB
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3126/ihub_1.png)
In Term Four, our Year One friends have been working hard on learning to use a positive, growth mindset. We have explored the power of the word ‘yet’. We may not always be able to master a new activity or lesson… yet!
We have also explored The Learning Pit. Before starting the process of learning something new, it is normal to feel nervous, excited and uncomfortable. As we work through our learning and begin problem solving, we can feel frustrated. This is called the Learning Pit.
Some ways to help ourselves climb out of a learning pit is to remind ourselves that it is okay to not be able to do something… yet! Asking a friend or a trusted adult to help us is always a good way to climb out of a learning pit.
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3127/picture1.png)
A powerful discussion to have with our children could be around a time that we ourselves felt frustrated with new learning. This can help normalise feelings of frustration and lead to celebrations when we have mastered that new task!
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3128/picture2.png)
Mrs Lo, Mrs Gardiner and Mrs Reese would like to say a great job to all the Year One students! They have embraced the power of… yet!
