Dear Parents and Caregivers
I can’t believe there are only 2 weeks left of the 2023 school year! We would like to see our Carbrook Kids finishing on a strong and positive note. It’s important to have conversations with your child/ren about the importance of finishing strong by enacting the Carbrook Values of being Safe, Respectful, Responsible and a Learner, right to the end.
School Opinion Survey
The suite of School Opinion Surveys is undertaken each year to obtain opinions about schools from parents/caregivers, students and school staff. The surveys are designed to help schools identify what they do well and find areas which may need improvement.
The feedback from the School Opinion Survey 2023 has been returned to the school to share with the school community and to inform future planning for the school.

Instrumental Music
Massive thanks to all of our musicians, performers, parents and staff for a lovely event at Show-vember last Thursday. The students had a wonderful time and it was great hearing our Bands perform along with the choir and seeing the dance troupe perform for the very first time.
Welcoming 2024 Preps
On Wednesday 22 November, we welcomed our newest Carbrook State School students as part of the school transition program. Thank you to Mrs Sarah Turgeon who has led the Prep Transition Program throughout the year, visiting and making connections with our local Kindies to support a smooth transition to school for our youngest cohort.
Step-Up Day
Teachers have been preparing for 2024, taking time to plan in year level teams for the new school year. Students will have the opportunity to meet their new teacher and peers for 2024 on Wednesday 6 December at 12:00pm. Students will bring home a note of introduction from their new teacher.
Generosity of Families
A huge thank you to the Carbrook State School for their generosity with the donations sent to school Friday 17 November for the free dress day. The variety and generosity of donations was amazing. All these donations have gone towards making some very exciting raffle prizes.
Remember to purchase your tickets.
Kind regards,
Sonya Wilson

Deputy Principal Liz Cook
We are entering the last couple of weeks for the school year, our students are completing their final assessments and the teachers are preparing your child/ren’s Semester Two report card. You will receive Semester Two’s report via email on Wednesday of Week 10 (6 December 2023). If your email details have changed since Semester One, please ensure you have provided this information to the school office so this can be updated.
At Carbrook State School we engage in rigorous moderation processes to quality assure teacher judgements made for learning areas and also for behaviour marks. This semester we have strengthened these processes by aligning our judgement for behaviour to a newly released five-point scale. This scale has been developed by the department for both effort and behaviour and provides a guide for schools to use when determining a grade. Below is a copy of the behaviour and effort scale along with a description to support your understanding when you receive the report card in Week 10.

I am looking forward to the last two weeks of the term, to celebrate the success of our school community and what we have achieved this year.
Kind regards,
Liz Cook
QParents
What is QParents?
QParents is an online portal that provides a convenient new way for parents to communicate with their child’s school. As a parent, you can view your child’s information and also submit changes to some of their details. The information that can be viewed includes timetables, report cards, attendance records and timely access to invoices and payment details. Parents can also update their child’s details, pay invoices online, and let the school know of changes to normal routine, such as when their child is unwell or has to leave early.
Why is it being introduced?
QParents has been designed to offer an online hub where parents can access essential information about their child, their activities and their performance at school. It saves time, and will provide anytime, anywhere accessibility using a PC, smart phone or tablet.
Thank you!
Thank you to all those parents who have already registered for QParents. We currently have 23% of our school registered and using QParents! We would love to see this percentage above 50% before the end of the year. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au

iHUB
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3161/ihub.png)
Welcome to iHub news for another week, my name is Ms Cutler and I have joined the iHub team this semester as part of the Inclusion Team. I have enjoyed working with the Year 1 cohort to support and foster students’ regulation and academic potential.
For the next three weeks we will continue to help students to excel in their learning, particularly in reading and fundamental maths concepts as we look forward into next year. These skills are essential for students in transitioning into Year 2, providing them with a solid foundation to build upon. While academia is important at this age, supporting our students in the transition into Year 2 both emotionally and socially, is essential for a positive mindset. Over the next two weeks students will have the opportunity to work with students from both classes, providing students with educational learning opportunities that foster engagement and social interaction within a controlled supportive environment.
Things that support a positive transition into a new year level:
- Talk about the new and exciting things they will get to do. This could be new eating areas or play areas
- Answering children’s questions about school
- Always being positive and realistic about school expectations
- Encourage them to get involved in school activities e.g. Dance, and Walkers Club
- Attend transition day – Meet the teacher
- Write a letter to your new teacher or draw them a picture
- Let children be independent. (Pack bag, water bottle, lunchbox and get dressed.)
- Make good habits and routines
Library
Thank you to every student that borrowed, cared for, read and was inspired through reading the school’s library books during 2023. On reflection, it certainly has been a very busy year in the library.
We started off the year with some students entering into the Qld School Library Week competition. Asha and Evie may not have won, but their entries did make it to QSL home page. You can view all of the entries at https://www.qsla.org.au/qslw

During Term 2, Carbrook State School joined schools around the country to read The Speedy Sloth, by Rebecca Young for National Simultaneous Storytime. Not only were we lucky enough to listen to this story about an inspiring sloth that ran its own race and didn’t care about coming first but one student from each class was also randomly drawn to take a copy of the book home.

Term 3 was the big one for the library with both Book Fair and Book Week. The Carbrook Community truly rose to this year’s Book Fair theme of Hats off to Reading. We had a great couple of days of having a mini bookstore in our very own school where students could browse and purchase books to take straight off the shelves. Off the shelves those books flew too, with hundreds of dollars raised to put books straight back into the hands of our students through the library. Thank you to all of the Carbrook Community for your support with not only Book Fair but Book Club also. By purchasing books through these avenues, you are not only supporting the Carbrook State School library but you are also instilling a lifelong love of reading with your children.

Book Week was the library's pinnacle week of the year with not only our ever growing Book Week dress up parade but plenty of READ, GROW, INSPIRE competitions. We had a huge week of book activities for students to participate in and we gave away dozens of books as prizes. Many children told us that it’s their favourite week of the year. Next year’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic’, so it’s time to start planning those costumes for 2024.

Speaking of activities, this year also saw the introduction of the second break activities. Chess Tuesday and Origami Wednesday were definitely the two most popular activities. We have a lot of strategic and creative students at Carbrook. The library will continue to be open during second break for students to enjoy the cool space for some quiet reading, a game of chess or to make a Christmas card for their family or friends.

Unfortunately, it is the time of year for our library books to have a little rest and get cleaned up for next year. That means borrowing for the year has ended and it is now time to return all those great reads back to the library. The library team needs any school books to be returned to the school now please. This will avoid students and parents receiving an overdue notice that will be sent home during Week 9 for any outstanding library books.
