As I prepared to pack my bags for my flight on the weekend, I have reflected on my first term leading this great school and I feel incredibly blessed. I have spent a lot of time talking to children about their learning and have been blown away by the level of detail in their knowledge and understanding. They are able to clearly articulate their learning and what they need to do personally to improve. This is a direct result of the quality of teaching they receive. The team at Carbrook are totally invested in the learning of their students, going above and beyond to ensure success for every child. The fact that this happens in such a safe and supportive community environment makes this school a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
School Values
A huge thank you to the 30 families who returned their toolbox to help shape our school’s core values. Next term we will ask students and staff the same questions and go through a process of scanning for similar ideas and themes to create a set of 4-6 values for our school to complement our Be’s. We will then look at structures and processes for explicitly teaching these values to our students, staff and community. At a glance, the responses we received were predominantly “soft” skills that focus on wellbeing and having a positive impact on self and others (more than “curriculum” skills).
P&C
Sadly, we were unable to fill the Executive positions on our P&C committee at the AGM this week. This means, at present, we do not have a P&C. Unfortunately, this will have an impact on our students and school. Without a P&C we cannot allow volunteers in our classrooms, we cannot hold community events like discos or fundraising events like Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day stalls. The positions we could not fill were Secretary and Treasurer (we do have a President and Vice-President). We will hold another meeting early next term in the hope of finding a parent or community member willing and able to take on these positions. Please contact the P&C or school office for more information.
I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank the outgoing P&C Executives who clearly poured significant time and effort into making events happen last year. Through their efforts, the children enjoyed some wonderful community events and will enjoy some exciting additions to our school which will be funded this year from last year’s money raised.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Dealing with student behaviour at Carbrook State School requires a proactive, consistent, and compassionate approach, aligned with the principles of Positive Behaviour for Learning. PBL focuses on encouraging positive behaviours through prevention, intervention, and support, fostering a culture of respect, responsibility and resilience. This process involves a collaborative effort between teachers, administrators, support staff, parents/guardians and the students themselves to cultivate a positive and inclusive school climate.
At the core of PBL implementation is the establishment of clear and consistent expectations for behaviour throughout the school. From classrooms to playgrounds, students are encouraged to demonstrate positive behaviours that align with our school's values. Teachers and staff collaborate to ensure that these expectations are effectively communicated and reinforced, allowing students to understand what is expected of them in various settings.
Do you know?
All students (100%) in the school receive support for their behavioural development.
Examples of this support are:
− regular explicit teaching of behavioural expectations and social-emotional competencies
− clear consistent expectations in place
− high rates of acknowledgement for expected behaviours
− effective instruction
To maintain a positive learning environment for all, teachers focus on positive reinforcement and redirecting students for minor, infrequent behaviour errors in the classroom. The process incorporates 5 steps with the focus on positive reinforcement and multiple opportunities for students to think, decide and act responsibly. Please see classroom behaviour management plan used in all classrooms.

The Ditto Show!
On Monday 11 March, Carbrook State School Prep to Year 2 students had a visit from the Bravehearts’ program.
Bravehearts’ Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure Program is a fun, interactive live incursion that teaches young children essential personal safety skills and knowledge using age-appropriate language, song, and dance, starring Bravehearts’ lovable lion cub ‘Ditto’ and a specially trained Education Facilitator.
Ditto taught us about safe and unsafe feelings through interactive discussions and cool songs. Ditto’s rules for keeping safe are:
- Recognise: we all have the right to feel safe with people.
- React: it’s ok to say no if you feel unsafe or unsure.
- Report: nothing is so yucky that you can’t tell someone about it.

Our Prep students are already showing great enthusiasm and talent in utilising digital tools to enhance their creativity and problem-solving skills! With the introduction of iPads into their learning environment, these young minds are not just consuming content but actively creating it. They engage in drawing activities on iPads, transforming their imaginative ideas into digital artwork. This not only cultivates their artistic flair but also familiarizes them with technology that is integral to modern living.
Beyond digital art, our Prep students are also learning to write their names on iPads. This activity marries the traditional skill of writing with digital technology, enabling students to gain proficiency in both handwritten and digital text creation. It's a foundational step that underscores the importance of adaptability and skill versatility in today's tech-driven world.
Building with LEGO is another approach to developing design technology skills. This hands-on activity fosters creativity, engineering skills, and teamwork as students build structures and solve problems together. These early experiences with construction and design lay a strong foundation for their future educational journeys.
In Years 1 through 4, our focus for the rest of this term shifts to understanding and navigating the digital world responsibly looking at key topics such as staying safe online, recognising and responding to cyberbullying, and understanding the concept of a digital footprint. Through interactive lessons and discussions, we have been learning how to protect our personal information, respect others online, and navigate the internet safely and ethically.
By addressing these topics early in their education, we aim to empower our students with the knowledge and skills they need to become safe, responsible, and respectful digital citizens.

Library News
‘Games and Giggles’ has continued to be a success in the Library during playtime. Not only have students appeared in the library to read a book and escape the heat, but they have also enjoyed many of the activities on offer throughout the week.

Chess and Lego are two popular activities that are developing students’ skills in sharing, turn taking, sportsmanship and even losing with grace.

Storytime is increasing in popularity as students have had the chance to be part of the stories each week. We have read two stories by author Doreen Cronin: Click, Clack Moo. Cows that Type and it’s sequel, Click, Clack, Peep! Students have enjoyed using puppets and props to be the characters of these stories. This is not the day to visit the library for quiet time as these story times have been known to get a little rowdy.

Mo Willems presents That is Not a Good Idea! was certainly a crowd favourite. The Players of the story included Mrs Ariel playing The Hungry Fox, Mrs Walls playing The Plump Goose with Mrs Boobyer and Max playing The Baby Geese. A huge thanks to Max for really getting into character as a baby goose.
