It was such a delight to be welcomed back so warmly this week after my trip. It was a wonderful reminder of what an incredible community we have at Carbrook. I wish to thank Mrs Reese, Mrs Walls, Ms Pattison and Ms Witt for their leadership of the school in my absence, and to every member of our team who kept everything running smoothly and made sure the students continued to receive a quality education in a caring setting.
ANZAC Day
This week we commemorate the brave men and women who have served our country to ensure we enjoy our many freedoms. It is through their courage that we can all receive an education, have choice, express our opinion and have access to food, water and shelter. I encourage you to speak to your children about the importance of ANZAC Day and remind them of how lucky they are. There are children in other parts of the world who are not so lucky, and live under the constant threat of war, starvation, illness and exploitation. With the many pressures of daily life, we can often forget the things we should be grateful for. It is important to teach our children perspective.
I was incredibly proud to be a part of our school’s ANZAC parade this week. Our students participated with deep respect, reflecting the importance of the event. It was warming to have a number of our community members who have served join us as well. Special mention to our choir who sang so beautifully, our School Captains who spoke so confidently, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Simone for preparing the service and Mrs Dillon for leading the choir and playing The Last Post and Rouse.
P&C
It was inspiring to attend the P&C meeting this week and see the many parents who are committed to our school and our children. I am excited to share that all of our executive positions were filled so our valuable P&C will continue. A big thank you to those who stepped up. A calendar of events will be developed which will provide enjoyable community-building experiences and opportunities to raise funds to support our kids. You are encouraged to keep an eye out for this calendar and consider how you can support the events.
Year 6 Camp
Judging from the photos and stories from last week, our Year 6 students and teachers had a blast at camp. I am told there was a healthy range of fun and challenges and their strength as a team grew. A really big thank you to the teachers who sacrifice a lot of their own family time to attend camp and give the children these experiences.
Guidance Officer Week
This week we celebrate the irreplaceable work of Guidance Officers in schools. We are incredibly fortunate to enjoy the dedicated, skilled and experienced services of Mr Craig Harvey. Mr Harvey’s calm, considered and compassionate support of our staff, students and families cannot be over-estimated. I know you will all join me in thanking Mr Harvey for the boundless value he adds to our school community and acknowledge his wisdom, dedication and kindness.

From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.
Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.
The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.
AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.
Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census. To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.
EVERY MINUTE COUNTS: SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Every Minute Counts ensures that we support our parents in having their child attend school for the maximum amount of time, as well as ensuring that our teachers make the most of instructional time, that we do not miss an opportunity for learning to take place.
School starts at 9:00am. Teaching our children to be punctual is a life-long quality habit. Ensuring children are ready for school and ready for instruction is paramount for the trajectory of their learning.
At Carbrook State School, our attendance target is 95%. To achieve this target, children must have less than 10 days absent in the school year. All absences must be explained. If your child has a serious illness that requires more than 3 consecutive days off from school, the school must be notified and a medical certificate provided. Of course, sickness cannot be avoided, however it is important children know the importance of attending school and how every minute of every school day counts.
This year, we will continue to track and monitor attendance in class and on parade. Each week an attendance trophy will be presented on parade to the classes that have the highest attendance in the previous week. A trophy will be presented to a class from P – 2 and 3 – 6 each week on parade. Hopefully, this is another strategy to encourage our students to come to school. Parents, your support in building attendance as a quality habit in their educational journey is greatly appreciated, this also includes being ready for instruction at 9:00am.

UNEXPLAINED ABSENCES
At Carbrook State School an automated system is used to inform parents via a SMS message if your child/children have not arrived at school. As instruction commences at 9:00am and class rolls are marked by 9:00am, any students that have not arrived by that time will be considered absent and therefore an automatic message will be generated in the system informing you that your child is absent from school.
If/when you receive an SMS message you will be required to reply to the text to explain the absence or if you believe your child/children is/should be at school contact the school office immediately on 3209 0888.
Please phone the Student Absence Line on 3209 0860 before 9:00am or use the Qparents App to advise of any/all occasions when your child/ren will be absent from school.
All mobile numbers need to be current. Please advise the school immediately if your number has changed.

ANZAC Morning
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3538/picture3.jpg)
On Wednesday 24 April, Carbrook State School remembered those who served our nation in times of war by holding an ANZAC day commemoration ceremony. Staff and students were joined by special guests, past and present servicemen and women, to honour the fallen. School captain, Ava Holme, recited the poem ‘Sir’ by Damian Morgan before class representatives laid hand-made wreaths at the cenotaph. The choir stood to sing the song ‘Lest we forget’ to a captivated audience before the school respectfully listened as Mrs Dillon played The Last Post before taking one minute of silence to remember those who made sacrifices for our freedom. As the final poppies were laid, the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems were sung with sentiment by the school community to conclude this moving commemoration. Lest we forget.

ARTS Kat Boobyer
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3525/arts.jpg)
South East Region invited students to enter their NAIDOC Art Competition with works based on this year’s theme: “Blak, loud and proud! Keep the fire burning.”
Visual Art students examined the works of First Nations artist Bronwyn Bancroft and then created special hybrid artworks combining a background painted with acrylics and then digitally detailing their works using software. The results are vibrant and striking and all students should be proud of the enthusiasm with which they approached new techniques.
The top entries selected for submission to Region are shown below, and updates on competition results will be shared when they come to hand. Amazing creations!
Congratulations to Aleeyah, Callum, Evie, Georgina, Hunter and Natasha.
