Just a Reminder
Athletics Carnival
Year 3 - 6
Wednesday 15 May 2024 9am
Principal Mark Winrow
Autumn weather has finally arrived given the distinct change in temperatures and humidity. The change in weather is a great reminder to us all to ensure we are eating, drinking and resting well to combat the impending flu season. We want to see every student at school everyday, so avoiding the dreaded flu is important.
Winter Uniform
The drop in temperatures also means a growing number of jumpers and long pants are being worn. Families are reminded that students should be wearing jumpers and pants which meet our dress code. It is also very important that all items of clothing are very clearly named so they can be returned when they are left behind after play.
Shrek
We are so lucky to have been invited as a whole school to a local theatre performance of 'Shrek' at Calvary Christian College today. A free live performance is a rare treat and one we are sure will engage our children and support their learning. I am sure it will be the highlight of the week for most.
Staffing Change
By now you will have learned that Mrs Sheri Walls, one of our highly valued teachers, will be leaving us next week after many years of service to the Carbrook community. We will be farewelling Sheri, as a school, at Monday’s parade. Community members are very welcome to join us.
Road Safety
The safety and wellbeing of our children and families is our number one priority. Parents are reminded of the importance of exercising extreme caution during pick-up and drop-off times in and around our school. While we explicitly teach our students about being safe around traffic, many of our younger children are still learning, so we must all remain vigilant. Using our designated kiss and drop areas is the safest way to keep our kids safe.
School Locker
We are now scheduled to
reopen on Friday 24th May.
Our Retail team are continuing to work alongside the contractors to ensure the revised re-opening date will be met.
Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time, we understand that our temporary closure has caused disruption and it’s our main priority to reopen as quickly as possible.
As we transition each school back into the store, we anticipate there may be longer than usual delivery times for online orders. Our team will continue to do everything possible to minimise this impact to customers.
We look forward to welcoming you and your community back in store in May 2024.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us at support@theschoollocker.com.au

The Life Education Team will be visiting Carbrook State School from Monday 20 May to Friday 24 May, 2024.
Life Education is a mobile learning centre that focuses on delivering preventative health education for young people. Life Education delivers a program to children, providing them with information, understanding, skills and strategies that they require to make safe decisions about their own health and well-being. Children will participate in an engaging lesson on the following topics delivered by the expert teaching team from Life Education.
Please note: the method of delivery will be Direct Delivery, not in the traditional van that you may be aware of previously for this program. Educators will present the modules to our students in our school hall.
The cost of the incursion is $12.
If you wish for your child to participate in this learning opportunity, we require parent permission. An online consent form has been sent home to all families. For those parents who are already on QParents, the online consent form can be completed electronically. As per the instructions included, we ask all other families to register for QParents, so you can also complete the form electronically. If you are unable to access QParents, please see Carbrook Office staff to complete the permission form in person. Please complete the online consent form through Qparents no later than Wednesday 15 May (Week 5).
We look forward to providing your child with this learning opportunity and welcoming the Life Education program to our school.

Play is the Way: The Golden Rule
With the introduction of the Play is the Way program to Carbrook State School, students have been engaging in lessons focused on ‘The Golden Rule.’
To explore this life raft concept, students carefully considered the following questions:
- How does sticking to this ‘Golden Rule’ help to make classrooms and our school safe and strong?
- What do you think is hard about sticking to the golden rule?
- To understand someone who is unlike you takes skills and qualities of character (virtues). What are some virtues and skills needed to genuinely understand someone who is different to you?
- What is the meaning of the expression, ‘don’t expect from others what you will not give yourself’.
Students then discussed how they would like to be treated by others, and also categorised different statements as ‘golden rules’ (treating others as you would like them to treat you), or ‘broken rules’ (treating others as they treat you). Some of these statements included:
- If you take my side, I’ll take your side
- If you have been mean, I will help you be kind
- If we are good friends, we can still disagree
- If you hurt me in any way, I will try and work through the problem with you
- If you are my friend, then you are always on my side
So far this term, students have engaged in two separate games so that they can demonstrate their understanding of the golden rule. The first game ‘Piccadilly Circus’ focused on relationship skills such as communicating clearly, listening, cooperation, resisting inappropriate social pressure, negotiating conflict and seeking help when needed. The second game, ‘Touch and Go’ focused on making constructive choices about personal behaviour, social norms, as well as self-management skills such as controlling impulses and motivating one’s self to set and achieve goals.

Year 3 engaging in their Play is the Way lesson

Book for Breakfast
PREP BOOKS FOR BREAKFAST – Year 1 Teacher (Shu-Fen Lo)
We are very excited to create more reading opportunities for our Prep students.
PREP BOOKS FOR BREAKFAST commenced in Term 2, Week 3 and takes place every Tuesday morning at 8:30am-8:50am outside the Prep classroom. We aim to provide an opportunity to enhance the reading skills of the junior participants and instil a love of reading, provide exposure to high quality literature, as well as providing a fun experience with books.
Thank you to our Year 6 students who have been reading stories to our Prep students aiming to motivate, share and build relationships with Carbrook State School's younger readers. The hope is our junior readers will be captivated and immerse themselves in stories, poems and pictures each Tuesday morning. They are all doing an amazing job!
Year 1
Assessments do not have to be pen and paper!
In Year 1 the children are demonstrating their skills, knowledge and understanding of giving and following directions (Numeracy) and communicating effectively (Literacy) by using Bee-Bots. Such a fun, hands on and engaging way to do assessments.
Library News
Welcome back to the Library for another terrific term of reading. We have a lot going on during the term to encourage students into this amazing space within our school.
‘Games and Giggles in the Library’ has kicked off. Students have been participating in chess, art, Lego, boardgames, reading and story time. Friday’s story was ‘I am the King’, written and illustrated by Leo Timmers. Students had an interactive experience through the jungle to see which animal the crown fit best.
There is an Anzac Day display in the Library where students can engage in and learn about this National Day of Remembrance. We have a variety of child friendly books available for students to borrow that will help them to understand the significance of ANZAC day.
National Simultaneous Storytime is coming up during Term 2. This year ‘Bowerbird Blues’ will be read simultaneously in libraries, schools, (including Carbrook State School) pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes and bookshops at 12pm on May 22nd. Watch this space for more information about this special event. A bowerbird has been very busy collecting blue items including books to create a bowerbird nest in our library.
This year’s Book Week theme is ‘Reading is Magic’ and even though Book Week isn’t until Term 3, we are so excited about Book Week that we have started to sneak some displays into the Library early. Displayed are the shortlisted books that Carbrook State School’s Library has purchased this year.
Each year Australia celebrates National Reconciliation Week between 27 May and 3 June. The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024 is Now More Than Ever. Our library will proudly showcase and support student’s learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through texts and displays in the library.
As well as all these exciting events during Term 2, we will also be open for borrowing everyday during ‘Games and Giggles’.
Students also visit the library every week with their class. Please refer to the timetable if you are unsure when your child’s library day is. Students are reminded that they must bring a library bag to borrow and borrowing is for one week only.
Thanks for your support with your child’s reading journey.

National Road Safety Week 2024
About the week
National Road Safety Week (NRSW) is an annual initiative established by President of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, Peter Frazer, after his daughter Sarah was killed in an avoidable crash in February 2012.
NRSW is run in partnership with road safety organisations and governments. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is a proud government partner who has supported Yellow Ribbon Road Safety Week since it started in May 2013. With your help, we can encourage all Queenslanders to drive so others survive.
National Road Safety Week will run 5–12 May 2024.
The aim of the week is to:
• Remember the approximately 1,200 people who lose their life and 40,000 seriously injured in road crashes on Australian roads each year by:
o Lighting landmarks around Australia yellow to shine a light on road safety
o Display a yellow ribbon (ribbons, lapel pins, vehicle stickers and flags)
• Encourage people to take a pledge to 'Drive so others survive' on the website
• Promote the aim of reducing lives lost and injured on our roads by changing driver behaviour
• Encourage communities to get involved, to promote National Road Safety Week, and advocate for safe behaviours on our roads and paths.
Daily themes
Each day of National Road Safety Week we focus on a different member of the community who can be affected by road trauma. The overarching theme for the week is Drive so others survive – All road safety is local.
