Principal Mark Winrow
Each day, I am reminded of how incredibly lucky the students at Carbrook State School are to have a team so committed to their success. The staff at Carbrook exceed the expectations of their roles every day to provide care, compassion and education for every child every day. We are blessed to have a team of professionals who work together to ensure the children learn and grow in a community environment. It is a real treat to be leading this team and working with this community.
Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics Carnival last week showcased the talents of our students on the track and in the field. A healthy balance of competition and participation was enjoyed by the students, with many sharing in each other’s success. At the beginning of the week, I challenged the students to show courage and participate, regardless of their ability and I was incredibly proud to hear of at least 5 students who attended and participated in their first carnival. The students who excelled in their events and were awarded ribbons are to be congratulated for their skill and effort. One of the many highlights was sharing the success of the day with the many families who joined us. It was a joy to see families sharing time together. Thanks must be extended to Mrs Dillon for her investment in making the day successful and to the staff who assisted, before, during and after the carnival.
Under 8’s Day
The big events keep on coming. We are so excited to hold our first community Under 8’s Day event next Wednesday. The staff have been busy preparing some engaging, age-appropriate activities which give young learners the opportunity to learn through play. The team have managed to attract a number of external organisations to showcase their services in the community which support our children and families. All children 0-8 are welcome to attend the day. Children who do not attend our school will require adult supervision. Families of our students are also strongly encouraged to come along and spend the morning engaging in play with their children.
The P&C will be providing a sausage sizzle for all children (P-6) at our school and the families who attend. Parents who wish to take advantage of this treat will need to pre-order for their child as per tuckshop processes (see the school or P&C Facebook pages or your email for details). They will also be selling drinks and treats to adults. An all-important coffee van will also be available to keep guests caffeinated.
National Simultaneous Story Time
On Wednesday we joined thousands of other children around Australia to enjoy a reading of the book Bowerbird Blues. Our students enjoyed wearing blue and participating in a range of related activities in class. Our incredible library team provided activities all week for the students to enjoy. Hopefully families have had an opportunity to tune in to Radio Carbrook via our school Facebook page to experience the book for themselves (thanks Mrs Boobyer and students).
P&C Day
Today schools across Queensland are celebrating and acknowledging the invaluable contributions P&Cs make to school communities. At Carbrook we are fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteers who love to serve our kids and community. They donate countless hours and effort to provide service and events to our school, raising funds to ensure our school enjoys additional resourcing. I have found our P&C to be passionate about our school, warmly welcoming and wonderfully dedicated. Personally, I wish to sincerely thank them for the often thankless job they provide, and I encourage community members to join me in these thanks.

Student Achievement
I was delighted to learn recently that Mason Odgaard in 5HP, was selected to represent Australia as the only Under 11’s Futsal goalkeeper to compete in the Philippines in November. Mason was selected as a result of his incredible performance representing Queensland earlier in the year. He has also been selected to represent Queensland again next year. This is an incredible achievement for a young man who also plays rugby league and competes in Junior Strongman competitions (current QLD champion). Congratulations Mason, we are very proud of you.
Reconciliation Week
Next week we will join millions of Australians from all backgrounds to celebrate Reconciliation Week. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, Cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Our school community is enriched by a range of Cultures including proud First Nations Australians, so it is important we embrace the concept of reconciliation. A number of activities have been planned in classrooms and our library to actively promote the language and actions of reconciliation. I invite you to take a close look at our wall of hands on the fence at the school drop off which has been created by all students.
Deputy Principal Kerry-Ann Reese
This week we welcomed Harold from the Life Education Program. Life Education is a mobile learning centre that focuses on delivering preventative health education for young people. The Life Education program delivered engaging lessons for our children providing them with information, understanding, skills and strategies that they require to make safe decisions about their own health and well-being.
Life Education Queensland are giving away a $2000 gift card to one person each term that simply provides some feedback on their child's experience with the Life Education Program and Healthy Harold Team. If you are the winner you get to choose between 3 gift cards and have it loaded up with $2000. Choices of gift cards are: Rebel sports, JB HI FI or a Woolworths gift card. We thank Harold and The Life Education Program for visiting our school.
I'd like to inform you that I'll be on leave starting from Thursday, 30 May, due to personal reasons. My return is scheduled for Monday 8 July 2024. During my absence, Mrs. Jess Carson will be stepping in as Deputy Principal.
Library News
Carbrook State School has been very blue lately, and in a good way!
Once again, we took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) which is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). This year’s picture book, Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker was listened to by thousands of students around the country at 12pm, Wednesday 22 May.
Thank you to Mrs Boobyer, Leo, Jaxon and Isabel for their special broadcast reading of Bowerbird Blues. You really BLUE us away!
Bowerbird Blues tells the story of a beautiful bowerbird searching for something blue to fill his bower. He loves blue, magnificent cobalt. Brilliant, vibrant BLUE! But something is missing. What could it be?
Once the story had been read, a copy of the book was given away to one student in each class to enjoy at home. Un-blue-evable! This was not the end of the blue festivities, we finished off the week with some special lunchtime activities in the library including bowerbird designing and bower creating. We even made a whole school bower filled with blue love hearts that students had written on or drawn something that’s a treasure to them.
The week was a truly blue-tiful experience.

Year 1 Incursion
On Thursday 16 May the Year one students were transported back in time during our incursion “Connect with Heritage”. We had a fun filled and hands on learning day investigating the lives of colonial Queenslanders. We engaged in 'wash day wonders', 'games on the green', 'the garden' and 'Mrs Fletcher’s kitchen'. We also compared objects from the past and objects used today and identified differences and similarities.
