Last week I was delighted to be part of a true community event which celebrated our school as a key community hub. Our Under 8’s Day was a huge success. The children of the Carbrook community loved engaging in learning through free play with friends and family. It was a true joy to welcome the community through the school gates to witness, first-hand, the quality of learning available at Carbrook State School. We received incredibly positive feedback from families, students, P&C, staff and visiting community organisations. This annual event will be one to look forward to on the calendar. Now it’s time to plan an equally engaging event for our Year 4-6 students…
Leave Valuables at Home
A reminder that students should not be bringing valuables to school. The definition of valuable is anything that has value to the students or their family. This could include toys, balls, money, trading cards (including Pokemon) and special stationery. Given the complexities of a school environment, we cannot guarantee the safety of items brought to school. If your child needs to bring an item to school, the best way to keep them safe is to hand them to the office or their class teacher for saFe-keeping until they are required or taken home.
CyberSafety
Families are reminded of the importance of monitoring their child’s online presence. While we explicitly teach all of our students how to be safe online and their responsibilities as a cyber citizen, we can only monitor their online activity when they are logged into the school’s network. We have recently been alerted to inappropriate online behaviour which has occurred outside of the school environment. If your child is exposed to inappropriate or concerning online content or comments, you are strongly encouraged to take a screenshot and report it either via the online platform in question or to the police. We want our children to be safe and become responsible cyber citizens.
Newly Refurbished Amenities
We were delighted to have the Senior toilet refurbishment completed last week. The toilets have received a repaint, resurfacing, deep clean and improved ventilation. We think they look fantastic and trust our students will show their appreciation by treating the new facility with respect. This project was co-funded by the Region and the school to ensure the best outcome. The contractors have now moved onto the Junior toilets.

Roof Repairs/Replacements
Over the holidays, and into the first week or two of Term 3, contractors will be on site to provide some much-needed roof repairs and replacements. We are excited to have this work funded by the Region as we have battled with water damage each time it has rained.
New Approach to Reading
Our school will be embarking on an exciting journey to develop a whole school Reading Framework based on the latest research, The Science of Reading. I applaud our teachers and teacher aides who are willing to change practices they have been using for more than 20 years to give our students the highest quality reading instruction. As with all major change, this will take considerable time and effort, requiring the unlearning of skills to relearn new skills. We will be working with schools and experts across the State to implement the change and I look forward to sharing the new practices along the way. As we learn more, we will be inviting parents to information sessions to share our new knowledge.
Year 5 Camp
Next Thursday and Friday our Year 5 students will attend their first school camp. The camp at Kindilan will likely challenge them in new ways and provide them with opportunities to demonstrate their leadership and courage. Thank you to the teachers who will accompany them on the camp as they sacrifice their own time to ensure our students have the experience. I look forward to visiting them on the Friday.
Principal Absence
I will be away from the school Tuesday 11, Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 June. I will be part of a team that conducts a review of Boyne Island State School. Being a peer reviewer of other schools is a wonderful experience and affords insight into how other schools are successful. I have been asked to participate in a number of school reviews over a number of years and each time I enjoy learning new approaches to education. Mrs Jess Carson , Acting Deputy Principal, will be the Officer in Charge in my absence.

Play is the Way: The Golden Rule
This term we have been learning about the Golden Rule and what it means. Learning to accept others for who they are and respecting their differences helps us learn about respect, what it looks like and what it feels like. In talking about what respect looks like, and feels like, students are learning how to treat others in ways that they themselves would like to treated.

This week we explore this life raft concept by pondering the following questions and statements:
- How does sticking to this ‘Golden Rule’ help to make classrooms/schools safe and strong?
- What do you think is hard about sticking to the golden rule?
- To understand someone who is unlike you takes skills and qualities of character (virtues). What are some virtues and skills needed to genuinely understand someone who is different to you?
- What is the meaning of the expression, ‘don’t expect from others what you will not give yourself.’
- When it comes to controlling our personal behaviour, the behaviour, The Golden Rule, is considered to be the most important rule of all.
The Golden Rule is considered to be the most important rule of all
Year 2 playing ‘Islands’
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3648/wwwwwww.png)
‘Islands’ How to play:
![](https://carbrookss.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/3614/picture3.png)
- Make a very large circle (fingertip to fingertip and then take 2 more steps out)
- Place hula hoops in the middle, random order
- Walk around the hula hoop ‘islands’ until teacher calls ‘islands’
- Students then have 5 seconds to get into a hula hoop
Rules
- Must have 3 or more in a hula hoop – but look around, if there is only 2 in a hoop and your group has 4, someone will need to go and help out
- Feet must not touch the hula hoop
- Everyone stops moving when whistle is blown after 5 seconds; teachers to check
- Students get a point if everyone is in hoops in the right number, no feet are touching the hoops and no one steps out
Not Just a game:
All of our ‘Play is the Way’ games teach students important life skills such as teamwork and collaboration as well as:
Responsible decision making – make constructive choices about personal behaviour and social interactions based on ethical standards, safety, and social norms.
Self-Management – effectively manage stress, control impulses, and motivate yourself to set and achieve goals
Social Awareness – Understand the perspective of others and empathise with them, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Relationship skills – communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.

Last week was National Reconciliation Week and this year’s theme, Now More Than Ever is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will —and must —continue.
Our library proudly fosters knowledge and supports students' learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through texts and displays in the library.
During Games and Giggles, Carbrook students were immersed in activities surrounding 'The Rainbow Serpent'. 'The Rainbow Serpent' plays a crucial role in Indigenous Dreamtime stories as it is the creator, protector of water and symbolises rebirth. We all had a lot of fun making Rainbow Serpents (big and small) lazing on the camp fire rug listening to 'The Rainbow Serpent' written and illustrated by Dick Roughsey and read by David Gulpilil.

Under 8's Morning
Last week we celebrated Carbrook State School's youngest children at our annual ‘Under 8’s Day’ extravaganza! The whole community came together to celebrate the well organised morning of non-stop fun! A special thanks to our wonderful P&C for the sausage sizzle and canteen; to Carbrook's staff for coordinating and running such a variety of activities and to the YMCA for the face painting! We thank the community organisations for providing their time and setting up wonderful play experiences for the children and their families.
