A great semester has ended in a very difficult week, with the passing of two cherished community members. I must applaud our staff for their continued commitment and unwavering dedication to the wellbeing and education of the students in their care, despite facing hurt and sadness. The way they have banded together and supported the whole community in healing has been inspirational.
Zone Athletics
What an incredible joy it was to receive messages while I was away, of the outstanding performances and culture demonstrated by our athletes at the Zone Carnival. Congratulations to our students and best wishes to those who will be competing at the next level. Credit must be given to Mrs Dillon who has prepared the athletes and, with the help of Mrs Stevens supported them while competing.
Exciting news ahead
We have two significant announcements to be made next semester which we hope will have a lasting, positive effect on our school community. One of these announcements will be made during NAIDOC week regarding our sports houses. The other will be made later in the term in regards to the values toolkit which canvassed community feedback on what values/tools we want our kids to leave school with. Keep an eye out for these.
Report Cards
Students’ report cards have been sent home via email. We send these home to report to parents their child’s performance against the achievement standards for their year level of the Australian Curriculum. While we all aim for A’s, it is important to remember that achieving a C is something to celebrate as it means that your child is achieving at the level appropriate for their level of schooling, when compared with all children in that year level across Australia. It is also important to focus on the level of achievement in light of the level of behaviour and effort. Some children can invest significant focussed effort and still fall short of a C, while others can achieve a B with very little effort. The level of effort is important to reflect on with your child. I encourage all parents to reflect on the report card with their child to celebrate the successes and perhaps set goals for next semester.
Year 5 Camp
It was a pleasure to attend camp last Friday with our Year 5 cohort. I had the opportunity to support two groups through a sensory walk in which they were blindfolded and required to navigate an obstacle course as a team. The children were all excited to report their favourite activity, dob in the campers who kept them awake and critique the food meal by meal. Thank you to the staff who kept them safe and engaged through the camp. It is a big sacrifice to take time from your own lives.
Fundraiser
As mentioned in a previous newsletter, one of our students has been selected to represent Australia for futsal. Mason’s selection requires him to travel to the Philippines later in the year, which is a considerable expense. Below is a link to a raffle being held to raise funds for Mason, given his National representation. Please consider this fundraising opportunity to support one of our students in representing Carbrook to the world.

PBL Update
Last week I was able to get around the school and speak with some students who had achieved success inside their classrooms. When reiterating our school motto ‘Success with Effort’, it was wonderful to hear that students knew why they had received their Gotchas and that most of them, were awarded for the effort being put in, not just the achievement.
Here are some students who received Gotcha tickets last week:
