I trust families enjoyed some quality time together over the holidays, creating lasting memories. It is almost cruel that the cold snap arrived when school returned, robbing us of extra time under the blankets. The good news is that it has not deterred the students from hitting the ground running with quality learning in every classroom. It is wonderful to report the eagerness of our students to continue to learn new knowledge and skills.
NAIDOC Week
Last week we celebrated NAIDOC week with a range of activities and surprises aimed at further embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. We were delighted to accept a native bee hive from the Boobyer family which will be installed later in the year when the bees are active. This addition will provide our students with ongoing opportunities to study the stingless bees and their importance to our environment.
The students were also encouraged to take the Yugambeh language challenge to win prizes. Learning local language is an important step in the reconciliation process so we were pleased to see our children take up the challenge. Have a go at learning these yourself (see below).

We were also excited to announce our new sport house mascots, which represent local animals and the local Yugambeh language.

Our Year 2 students were afforded the extra NAIDOC activity of travelling to the Kingston Butter Factory for a special theatre performance of 'Finding My Spirit'. The children, and staff, thoroughly loved the excursion.
Westpac Helicopter Visit
As you have likely heard, the Westpac Surf Life Saving Queensland Rescue helicopter is landing on our school oval today. This treat has stirred some excitement amongst the students. The visit includes a Beach Safety presentation. The children will be given the opportunity to closely inspect the helicopter and ask some questions of the flight crew. Being such a big event, local media have been invited to capture the visit, so parents have been encouraged to complete a special media consent form through QParents and email. Students without permission will still attend the event, but will not be filmed or photographed by media. Look out for photos in Carbrook's next newsletter.
Disco
As if a helicopter visit isn’t enough to excite the senses, it will be followed by the P&C Pyjama Disco tonight. I look forward to enjoying time with students and families on the night in a fun, social setting.
Birdwing Butterfly Visit
Fridays must be the day to create memories at Carbrook State School because next Friday, our Prep and Year 1 classes will have a Birdwing Butterfly expert visit them to share the importance of this local native species to our eco-system. During the visit, they will also have the opportunity to plant vines in our schoolyard to attract the butterflies into our grounds and assist our local environment.
Date Claimer
On Thursday 8 August, our classrooms will open their doors for families to come and witness the quality learning which occurs everyday. Classrooms will be open from 3:30-5:00 with displays of student work across all learning areas and provide an opportunity for parents to discuss the work with their children. Teachers will be on hand in classrooms to answer questions and look forward to meeting as many families as possible. We are encouraging parents to leave the evening with answers to the following 5 questions for learning:
* What is my child learning about?
* How are they going in their learning?
* How do they know?
* What is their next step for improvement?
* Where can they go for help?
School Opinion Survey
Parents will have received an invitation via email this week to complete the annual School Opinion Survey. This survey provides us with feedback on what we are doing well and should continue, and areas we can improve. The results of the survey will be shared with the community later in the year, and be used for future planning. We appreciate your honest reflections.

Attention please!
Our two main library events for the year will take place this term!
Yes! Book Fair will be returning to Carbrook State School. Book Fair is when we have a book store open for 3 days in our very own school. It will run from Wednesday 7 August until Friday 9 August and will be open during The Celebration of Learning for you to come and visit. This is our major library fundraising event for the year, so win win! You get to take home some great books and Carbrook’s library gets to expand all those new books that our students are desperate to read. Watch out for more information to follow.

Book Week will be huge at Carbrook State School again this year. Book Week is during Week 7, from Monday 19 August. There are loads of activities planned for the week but the most important one will be the Dress Up Parade on the morning of Wednesday 21 August. The theme for this year’s Book Week is ‘Reading is Magic’, so time to get those costumes ready!

Olympics Unleashed
On Friday 12 July Carbrook State School students from Years 3-6 had the privilege of meeting an Olympian.
Taylor McKeown visited our school to share her Olympic journey. She shared the importance of knowing how to build resilience, goal setting and how to find what you are passionate about and strive for it.
Students heard first-hand from Taylor McKeown about how they can overcome challenges to compete in their chosen sport, and how some lessons they’ve learnt in sport can help them to be the best they can be in life.
Taylor McKeown gave us a snap shot into her Olympic journey and how she overcame the challenges she faced to compete at the highest level. Taylor helped to inspire the students at Carbrook State School to be the best they can be – whether that’s in school, at home, on the sporting field or with friends.
Thank you, Taylor McKeown for sharing your time with Carbrook State School, it was an experience I’m sure students will never forget.
GO AUSTRALIA!
