I have no doubt you are reading this rugged up, trying to stay warm. You may also have the Olympics running in the background to celebrate the successes of the athletes with your family. The Olympics can have the power to inspire our children to greatness, but they can also have some believing it is an impossible dream. I encourage you to remind children (and yourselves) that what we see at the Olympics is the end of a 4 year journey of up and downs. That it would have felt like an impossible dream to the athletes at times as well. That it took sacrifice, hard work, disappointment and hours of practise to enjoy their success. Once we find what we love, we all have the potential to achieve greatness with it, we just need to work for it and learn from our mistakes.
Staff Shoutout
In my humble opinion, I would like to acknowledge that the staff at our school (teaching and non-teaching) have all reached greatness in the professions that they love. I am inspired daily by the lengths they go to to ensure their students are happily learning in a safe and supportive environment. It is the extra they do that largely goes unnoticed and deserves significant recognition. Daily, I witness their willingness to offer their own time and resources to support children in need and I overhear conversations between each other reflecting on what changes they can make to inspire growth in their students. I also revel in their excitement as they share the latest professional podcast or reading they have accessed to find new ways to teach and share their knowledge and skills. We are all blessed to have such an outstanding staff here at Carbrook and I think this should be publicly celebrated.
Excursions and Incursions
One clear way they support our students to consolidate their learning is offering such a range of real-life and life-like experiences. Last week our Preps, Year 1 and Year 2 students all enjoyed a visit from Wildlife Org to hear about the locally native Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. They also had the chance to create their own butterfly garden.
This week our Year 4 students were taken to the Moreton Bay Environmental Education Centre to learn about the journey of Pamphlett, Parsons and Finnegan through Quandamooka (Moreton Bay) in 1823. They discovered local artefacts and significant geography , survival techniques and how to translate Jandai language. It was a wonderful opportunity.
Winter Uniforms
As always happens at this time of year in schools across Queensland, the lost property box is filling with unnamed jumpers and pants which are removed and forgotten as the day heats up. Parents and children are encouraged to regularly check the lost property for missing items and to ensure all items are named so they can be returned.

Celebration of Learning
Our annual Celebration of Learning event is less than a week away. All parents are encouraged to come next Thursday 8 August between 3:30-5:00 to wander through our open classrooms and speak to their children about their learning. It is a great opportunity to catch up with teachers and show your children the importance you place on their education. While you’re here, don’t forget to head to the arts studio to check out the Book Fair.
School Opinion Survey
We currently have less than 20% of our parents who have completed the annual School Opinion Survey. This survey is used to make informed decisions about what we are doing well and should continue doing, and what we need to improve. We encourage all parents to check their email inbox and follow the link to complete the survey, so that we avoid making changes which may not reflect the opinions of the majority. The survey closes on Friday 16 August 2024.
First Nations NAIDOC Art Competiton

This week on parade we awarded our Yugambeh language challenge prizes to year level champions and runners-up. All Carbrook learners were challenged to master five new Yugambeh phrases throughout NAIDOC week and the enthusiasm was sky-high! A special NAIDOC Art prize was also awarded to Callum from Year 5.
The Runners Up:
Toby, Bentley, Alex, Scout, Dylan, Benji, Oliver.
The Champions:
Soren, Amara, Ruby, Ewan, Zoe, Neo, Waverley.
Congratulations to all students who are helping keep this amazing language alive!

Prep Excursion
Paradise Country
Prep had a wonderful day at Paradise Country Farm last Thursday. The adventure began with a welcoming morning tea of camp oven-cooked damper. Next, we saw some playful goats, woolly sheep, and other farmyard animals, who were more than happy to cuddle up with us. We learned about their changing needs as they grow and about the sustainability of vegetable gardens.
The excitement continued as we witnessed the amazing skills of whip-cracking cowgirls and tricky boomerang throwing. We discovered that animals have many uses for a farmer, such as providing wool for clothing and warmth, as well as milk for drinking and making other dairy products. We are not convinced that the children believed that strawberry and chocolate milk come straight from the cow, as the cheeky farmer milking led us to believe!
The students relaxed around a campfire and had the opportunity to learn about traditional Billy Tea. Our visit to the adorable meerkat family enclosure was a cuteness overload, with many of us wanting to take them home in our backpacks! We watched as they jumped, played, and feasted on cockroaches and crickets. We tiptoed around sleepy kangaroos, managing to pat a few sunbathing giants. The highlight for many was getting an up-close view of a wriggly but adorable koala and a gentle, curious python.
The day wrapped up with a fantastic stage show featuring Shaun the Sheep and his friends, captivating our tired but happy group of kids. It was a day full of wonder and excitement, leaving us with memories to treasure.

Year 1 Excursion
Richmond Birdwing Butterfly talk and vine planting
On Friday 26 July, the Prep and Year 1 students welcomed Hannah from Wildlife QLD to tell us all about the almost extinct Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is the largest subtropical Australian butterfly, found only in northern New South Wales and South East Queensland. Richmond Birdwing Butterfly populations have declined in Queensland since the 1920s following the loss and fragmentation of their habitats. The students learnt how to create habitats for these stunning butterflies and with the help of our school grounds keeper and Hannah the students have created a beautiful butterfly garden habitat near our Prep and Year 1 classrooms. We can’t wait to care for this beautiful garden, watch it grow and hopefully see it attract some butterflies.
