Principal Mark Winrow
This week is a big week at our school with a combining of Science Week and Anti-Bullying Week, with both culminating in big events on Friday 16 August. The students are encouraged to wear purple (or orange) on Friday to show their support for a culture of kindness at our school, and they will also enjoy the Street Science Incursion. Keep an eye out along our fence for our students’ messages against bullying which they have written on purple material.
Book Week
There is no break from the events for our kids to celebrate next week either. Next week is Book Week, which is a big celebration at our school. There is extreme excitement about the huge range of events planned for the kids to celebrate books and reading. Perhaps the most highly anticipated event is our book week parade. Children are encouraged to dress up as a book character and parade their costume around the hall for all students and parents in attendance. The parade will be held at 9am in the hall. Younger siblings are also invited to parade with the brother/sisters if they choose. This is a true family event.
Celebration of Learning
A huge thank you to those parents who were able to attend our Celebration of Learning event last Thursday. As I walked through classrooms and around classrooms I was overwhelmed with the positivity and genuine interest shown in the learning which occurs in our school everyday. It was a real delight to hear children discussing learning with specificity and show genuine pride in their success. I must acknowledge the work of all of our staff who contributed to the success of this event and showcasing our school as THE place to learn.
2025 Preps
Our Prep Transition program for our 2025 preps starts to ramp up with interviews, open days and parent information sessions all approaching. Obviously, word about how awesome our school is spreading as our prep classes are filling quicker than usual. If you have a child starting Prep in 2025, you are strongly encouraged to get your enrolment forms in as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on the planned events or a spot in the classes for 2025.
Communication
Included with this newsletter are our newly developed Communication Policy and Parent and Community Code of Conduct. They have been developed to highlight the importance we place on maintaining open, respectful two-way communication between home and school. Please read through these carefully so we can continue to work harmoniously towards the common goal of success for your children. A key inclusion in these documents is a reminder to parents to avoid contacting other parents directly when an issue arises between child/children at school. The correct process is to contact the school to be managed to avoid further complications.
School Opinion Survey
A final reminder to parents to complete the School Opinion Survey before it closes this Friday, 16 August. Your invitation to complete the survey was emailed in July by the Department of Education. Your feedback informs our future decision-making to ensure our school continues to improve, but also maintain the successful elements we already have in place.
Winter Uniforms
With weather being unpredictable, we have noticed an increase in winter uniform items being left around the school. Every effort is made to return found items to their rightful owner, but this cannot happen if they are not named. All items which cannot be returned can be found on the lost property rack outside the office.
Sadly, this is my last newsletter for awhile as I take on a temporary role for the Region. I know that with the quality of staff we have at Carbrook all students will continue to be safe, happy, successful learners in my absence. In the words of a famous Austrian “I’ll be back!”.
Deputy Principal Kerry-Ann Reese
I am pleased to announce my return to Carbrook after a period of health-related leave. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Jess Carson for her outstanding leadership as Acting Deputy Principal during my absence. Her unwavering support for both students and staff has been exemplary, and I commend her for her dedication to our school community. I am looking forward to reconnecting with everyone in the near future.
Parent Teacher Interviews
At Carbrook State School we take pride in providing parents with as much information as we can about your child’s learning journey which includes Curriculum Newsletters, Parent Teacher Information Sessions, weekly/fortnightly class communication and Parent Teacher Interviews.
In Week 9 this term, Parent Teacher Interviews will be offered to parents on Wednesday 4 September from 3:15pm – 6:00pm. Parents will have the opportunity to book in a time to meet with the teacher during this time. In the coming weeks, please look out for an email with information on how to book an interview.
Surf Life Saving Queensland Beach Safety Program
As part of the Queensland Government’s Water Safety and Learn to Swim Program, Carbrook State School has organised a Surf Life Saving Queensland Beach Safety Program for all students in Prep, Year 2, 4 and 6. All other year levels will participate in a ‘Learn to Swim Program’ hosted by the Victoria Point YMCA in Term 4.
This week, details of this Beach Safety Program have been communicated to families of these students.
The Beach Safety program will be conducted in Week 10 of this term by instructors from Surf Life Saving Queensland. It will be held on the Raby Bay foreshore and beach area.
The Beach Safety Program combines dry and water based activities designed to be fun, interactive and a great way to educate children about the important aspects of sun, surf and beach safety, whilst increasing their skills and confidence in the water and on the beach. Important safety information is integrated into activities such as swim survival, rescues, board paddling and beach games.
All permission and payments for this event are due by Tuesday 3 September, 2024.

Library News
Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone in the community who visited Book Fair last week to make it a huge success. Thank you also to the group of Year 6 students who chose around 50 new books to add to our library from junior fiction, graphic novels and non-fiction.
As we farewell Book Fair, we now say ‘Bring on Book Week’. Book Week is the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s key highlight national event that will officially run from Saturday 17 August – Friday 23 August.
At Carbrook State School, we will be celebrating children’s books with many activities and competitions. In fact, our weeklong ‘Reading is Magic’ party has already begun with the reading of 18 Shortlisted Books from 3 different shortlisted categories: Picture Book, New Illustrator Award and Eve Pownall Award (non-fiction presented in various styles). All students will have the opportunity to vote for ‘Carbrook State School’s Book of the Year’ in each category. We will then compare our favourites to the Children’s Book Council of Australia judges’. There seem to be some clear favourites already!
Students will need to listen on parade and check out the library to find other activities running during our reading week.
A ‘Reading is Magic’ emoji garden is magically sprouting in the library. Students can design their own emojis based on their favourite book character.
The ‘Design your own Library Bag’ competition will be back this year with the winning designs to be printed onto a tie-dyed library bag for students to keep. What a great prize to win to encourage those readers to borrow all those new books from the library.
Most importantly though, is Carbrook State School’s Dress Up Parade which will be held on Wednesday 21 August at 9am at the school hall. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character for THE WHOLE DAY! Good luck to everyone in finalising those creative costumes. Wednesday will also give students a chance to relax during play breaks with teachers reading ‘Books on Blankets’ throughout the school.
Please encourage your children to get involved in these wonderful Book Week activities as the library will also be giving away lots of prizes (books of course) during this ‘Reading is Magic’ week.

Parking at Carbrook Sate School
In light of safety concerns, ongoing patrols are essential to monitor parking around Carbrook State School.
Message from Logan City Council: Parents and members of the school community have expressed frustration with unsafe parking practices by other parents and caregivers. These practices pose a significant risk to child safety, especially near bus zones, yellow lines, nature strips, and pedestrian crossings. In light of these safety concerns, ongoing patrols will be performed by Logan City Council to monitor parking around Carbrook State School.
